Really excited about this film from James Mangold (Logan, 3:10 to Yuma) though I have some reservations about Damon as Carroll Shelby (his attempt at what appears to be a Southern accent is cringeworthy) but Bale is rock solid in everything. Add Jon Bernthal as Lee Iacocca and should make for a lot of fun.

Academy Award-winners Matt Damon and Christian Bale star in FORD v FERRARI, based on the remarkable true story of the visionary American car designer Carroll Shelby (Damon) and the fearless British-born driver Ken Miles (Bale), who together battled corporate interference, the laws of physics, and their own personal demons to build a revolutionary race car for Ford Motor Company and take on the dominating race cars of Enzo Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France in 1966. In Theaters November 15

Ooohhhhh! The GT-40. What a gorgeous car! Carroll Shelby kicked Ferrari’s ass

Looks good, I just hope it's not one of those films where the best & only good parts are the previews.

I was excited to see Rush when it came out a few years ago, and it was a bit disappointing. One of the few Ron Howard flicks that I did not care for much. Hope this is better. By the way, the term is "Motorhead", or "Petrolhead" (if you are British).

I worked with a tier one supplier on the GT 40 back 15-20 years ago. We brought to the table a new low weight, low pressure plastic substrate material which could be tooled very inexpensively since we only needed low pressure forming, not high tonnage injection molding. We basically made the entire interior out of this material which had great acoustical properties, and was very light. Worked with a lot of the Ford engineerers. To sign an agreement with Ford to work with them after 2-3 weeks of negotiating, I asked for me and my team to get a test drive in the car when finished......Ford agreed and we worked on the Ford GT. Once the car was completed we went out to the test track and me and the 2 other engineers that worked on the vehicle got a test drive.....probably at about 80% of the capacity of the car. The funniest thing about the ride was that the test driver smoked as he was driving around the track. He brought a coffee mug to leave his ashes in his lap.

Right hand drive with the gear lever on the right, so when you got in, you had to step over the shift knob, correct?

PSURO

The gear shift was on the right for the driver.

I rode in the passenger seat and both of us were jammed into the seats. I do not remember anyone having to climb around the shifter.

The highest speed that we saw on the 2 mile drive was about 145 mph. The car had the capability to go to one 180 mph.

Oh - I read your post like you had driven it - THAT would have been a thrill.

In my opinion, the Ford GT is really the only true super car a major american carmaker ever made.
One of the top ten cars ever made.

If I had the cash for that, I’d get it repainted in its original racing colors

Quick look at the topic with these old eyes thought we were talking about that fabulous movie Ford Fairlane starring none other than the Dice Man and Al Bundy.

???!!!?? GT40 was last produced around 50yrs ago

This is based on the book "Go Like Hell" by A.J. Baime.
It is a super good read.
Give it a try.

The Corvette Z06 certainly qualifies, and the new ZR1 is even hotter.

Nope. Chevy marketing folks can say all sorsta things - but the Z06 is a sports car... a very very capable sports car and a tremendous value ... but no, it’s no supercar. Supercar is a different echelon for hand-made, ultra-rare exotics ...

I always thought it was about performance, and I still do.

Well, if some consider Joan Jett a RnRHoF’r ... then a Z06 can be considered, by some, a supercar ...

If you have to argue that a car should be considered a supercar - then I believe it fails the litmus test

The Z06 is a fantastic sportscar that delivers supercar-like performance for a lot less $$$ ... which IMHO makes it better than a supercar ... one can actually enjoy a Z06...

Great sportscars are 1000% more interesting to me than any stupid supercar

I am in the same boat with you.... Enzo Ferrari... Porsche 918 Spyder, etc Supercars.... Corvette Z06 nope, great car in performance and price but not a SuperCar. This comes from a guy whose family member raced for Carroll Shelby in the Ford Cobra's as a hired Ford Factory Driver.

Okay, but what about the Dodge Viper? Curiously enough Automobile magazine had an article about whether or not the Viper could be considered a 'supercar'....(which I guess disqualifies it). IMO, the relative affordability of a Viper is a mark against it:

After taking a look at the Viper’s immediately recognizable silhouette, which checks off the design category, Bell moves on to see if the Viper has the muscle to match the aggressive appearance. With 645 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque from its monstrous 8.4-liter V-10 engine, the Viper has more than enough gumption to land it squarely in the path of more expensive and exotic metal from other manufacturers, meeting the criteria for the power category.

The Viper is a stand-out in the craftsmanship category as well, as the Viper is hand welded, hand stitched, and hand built. Want your Viper to appear exactly to your specifications? No problem, as there are 25 million different combinations of color, wheels, and interior appearance options available to create your one-of-a-kind car. For lineage, the Viper brings racing credentials spanning back to the 1990’s to the table. Over the course of its lifetime, the Viper has seen three victories in the 24 Hours of the Nurburgring, three 24 Hours of Le Mans, and five-time FIA GT World championship victories.

Finally, Justin takes to the Streets of Willow to put the Viper through its paces. The result? The Viper lives up to its supercar reputation, with a 0-60 time of just 3.3 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 206 mph.

The Viper would be a more-interesting argument for reasons you cite, alas - if you have to present a case or sell it to me as a supercar - it’s probably not a supercar.... but in the end, IMHO the Viper is a sledgehammer sportscar...

Some probably think of Pam Anderson as a supermodel... she’s not... Viper is to supercars as Pam Anderson is to supermodels

For me no it's not. 1 is price... plus I want to see it's handling characteristics. Anyone can build a muscle car that is fast in a straight line. Biggest things for me to qualify as a super car is Performance, Price, Exclusive. Meaning I want a limited run of the car. Not as many as Detroit will pump out. It is an exclusive club owning a Enzo Ferrari or a Porsche 918 Spyder. There are not many of them around and it means something and is special to own one.

I know this thread is about cars, but dammit, we have rules...
