Pennsylvania State University: State College, PA
Don't let the old furniture and dark basement feel of Zeno's Pub turn you off. Share a few pitchers surrounded by Penn State memorabilia and you'll have a night to remember ... that is if you soak up the booze with some late-night eats.
A buddy of mine worked the door, so it was the first bar I ever drank in as a 20 year old. Oh how I wish I could beam myself back to those days for an order of Chicken Nuggets and a Bloody Mary. It will always be my favorite bar.

It's a great bar but it's a stretch to call it the best college bar since the college kids (at least the undergrads) don't go there.

I’d agree with this. When I was there in the early aughts I couldn’t drag any of my buddies in there because it had (has?) the rep of being an alumni only spot. In the end it was a good thing because I would’ve gone broke had I known the variety of beers they served.

"When you're in a bar, the world is still outside, but, at least for the moment, it doesn't have you by the throat". Something I saw in Zeno's.

My favorite was the Phyrst as a student, primarily to see the poster BriarwoodBash’s band Conspiracy play back in the late 70’s. Nothing like $1.75 pitchers of Prior Double Dark (like today’s microbrews) and hearing good music.

My fav was “Smoke crack, worship satan, and don’t forget to wipe “

I preferred Zeno’s 10:1 over about any other option. But I agree that it’s not your standard get drunk and hook up college bar.

It worked great for me because I lived down South Allen. Good thing I had such a small budget or I would have spent too much time in there.

As a former bartender I would say it was! Early 80's during the summer!! I remember The Collegian had an article telling the students that Zeno's got a table!!!

I grew up in State College. The Phyrst Family was definitely a draw during its day. I certainly wouldn't question what you and others enjoyed about it. It definitely is/was a unique place that people gravitated too. I too have a great memory or two from there. As I look back it was more a choice of where your social circle hung out. I must say as a local it wasn't in the top six of where my circle would normally choose to frequent....but what did we know? We were just trying to catch a buzz! Cheers!

I went somewhat regularly before you began going and I always loved it. It was a place with great atmosphere and boatloads of variety (foreign and domestic) before so many other places followed suit. But it was more expensive that a college student should expect as a regular watering hole. Loved it and it’s not a bad inclusion in the discussion, but not the best in the state.

Thumbs up to the shout-out to Kelly’s pre-reno. Was legendary but doesn’t belong in the discussion.

I can safely say that I was a customer of Zeno's before anyone else in this thread. Owners Zeno Pappas and his brother Chris (Mr C's) were friends of mine. That had a private party the night before the grand opening of Zeno's. When I went up to the bar to order a beer, I handed the bartender a dollar to pay for it. He handed it back saying that all drinks were free that night. I insisted that he take my money, so that for the rest of my life, I could claim to be the first paying customer of the bar (obviously, I'm still making that claim almost 50 years later). In honor of that moment, I've recently decided to attempt to be the first paying customer of every bar in town as it opens. So far, I've notches in my belt for Champs Downtown, Doggie's, The Basement Nightspot, and Jax. I'm keeping my eye on the spot next to Local Whiskey at the corner of Allen and Beaver as my next objective.

You win. First paying customer of arguably the best college bar in PA. Not bad.

Now that is a cool story!

It was my late Friday afternoon bar during my college days.

It was my late Friday morning bar. A reward for suffering through classes in Hammond and Sackett, and so conveniently located just across the street..
