Now this - this is a culture we should all admire. Also, anyone else sort of shocked Liberty has a billion dollar endowment? Hm. Get to it Bob....

Liberty University will stop at nothing, it seems, to raise the profile of its football program. Last fall, it hired disgraced former Baylor athletic director Ian McCaw, who resigned from Baylor when it came out that he took part in covering up reports of rapes that involved university football players. That didn’t stop Liberty from welcoming him with open arms. McCaw described his intention to elevate Liberty to “the level of Notre Dame,” and Liberty’s president Jerry Falwell Jr.—the man who once exhorted his students to “end those Muslims”—praised McCaw’s tenure at Baylor, calling his hiring “exciting.”

Now, the Liberty Flames will pay Old Dominion an unprecedented $1.32 million to play them in their 2018 season home opener, according to the Virginian-Pilot, which got a copy of contract. While less morally bankrupt than its hiring of McCaw, Liberty’s decision to pay this huge sum shows how desperate it was to ensure its home opener for 2018—its first season as an FBS program—would be against FBS competition.

It’s unheard of for universities like Liberty, an evangelical mid-major in Lynchburg, Va., to pay this much for a “buy game”—such huge amounts usually are offered up by programs in the power conferences to smaller schools in return for nearly certain record-padding victories. But Liberty, with its $1 billion endowment, its own televised sports network, and its army of Christian supporters and donors, had the means to ensure its football team would play FBS competition in its first 2018 home game. In this case, the Pilot noted, Liberty isn’t even favored to win.

The 2017 and 2018 seasons will be part of the Flames’ transition to FBS. NCAA rules mandate that they have to play at least three FBS home games in 2018. They are scheduled to play four FBS home games: Old Dominion, North Texas, Troy and New Mexico State, which Liberty also will play on the road. As for the rest of Liberty’s schedule, the Pilot reported:

Liberty officials had planned to release their schedule later this spring, but President Trump forced their hand when he read the school’s future schedules aloud at Liberty’s graduation on Saturday.

Who claimed that was a "record amount"?

That is pretty much the "average" for what P5 teams pay for FBS OOC pay-day games.

We're paying Georgia State $1,200,000 for the game in Happy Valley this September.

We pay for home games because we can, we have the $. I see no issue with Liberty doing similarly with their $.

It's kind of hilarious the author (linked in the OP) used the term "morally bankrupt" as regards ensuring a school gets a home football game. What is "morally bankrupt" about that?!?!?!? Absolutely nothing! It's certainly not illegal, dozens of college football teams do it, and it will be done with no public taxpayer dollars!

But then again, the author likely has an agenda against Liberty University. Thus, it becomes "morally bankrupt."

This does remind me --- we still have Idaho on the schedule for 2019. Idaho is going down to FCS, so we really should replace that game. Given Liberty is an FBS newcomer and is looking to fill out their own schedule (both buying games and taking buy games as part of the process) - we should give them a call.

I took the term 'unprecedented' to mean 'record amount' - faulty inference I guess, my bad.
I'm guessing it may be the most Liberty has ever paid (which would go without saying - since they are just moving up to "D1", or whatever one wants to call it now)

FWIW - the "going rate", for big-time programs (like PSU) is about $1,000,000 for low level programs........ I know some - especially in the SEC - have been paying $1,500,000-Ish per game (even for crappy opponents)

The mandate to no longer schedule "D2" schools is REALLY driving up the costs.
A lot more games needing to be scheduled with fewer potential opponents.
Back in the day, a program like PSU could wave $200,000 at a Youngstown State or Coastal Carolina and sign 'em up in a heartbeat.

That is likely the case.

This doesn't make Liberty morally bankrupt, they've been morally bankrupt ever since they decided to fire Morgan Hout (after a 8-3 season) so they could hire a born again Catholic , Coach Sam.

The Author most definitely had an agenda and was not shy in hiding it. While some of the things Liberty has done are stupid (Baylor ex AD hire), I don't need some stupid blogger to tell me what to be outraged about - that is Bob's job. .

And they're likely paying to have their asses kicked.

They likely feel it is worth it to further "convince" people of their legitimacy.

18,000 degrees conferred the other day. Think about that. Take as long as you need.
