Stumbled on this show the other day and was instantly obsessed; the gist is a married couple (including a retired British Engineering Army Officer who may be the most well rounded, handiest, most positive dispositioned and best mustached man I've ever seen) and his artsy, designer wife and their two small children, purchase a chateau in France (which is absolutely gorgeous) for something like $350,000 with plans to renovate and rent out for weddings and other private events. The work the Colonel and his wife do is amazing - installing heat, running water, and an elevator, in addition to renovating several rooms, are the story for the first couple episodes. There are some fun cultural interactions and neat factoids (for example, in France, vacations and operating hours for bakers/bakeries are regulated so that people always have access to bread) but the real joy (outside of the bucolic scenery) is watching all the work being done to get the chateau in some kind of modern working order. The show was originally produced by the BBC, so it's of very good quality. I believe you can watch the first six or so episodes on demand.

My wife watches it all the time. I too have watched some episodes. He is really talented with the renovation work. They have done a fabulous job with that renovation costing big bucks. They are very pleasant people, not fake.
