I gotta tell you, I know longer listen to sad songs or watch sad movies. While trying to avoid becoming "Pollyanna", I just don't have the time for negativity that isn't necessary. Kind of "control what you can control" mentality. I try to keep my energy level up and think in terms of "what can be" as opposed to "what is".

Certainly one philosophy. Eternal sunshine and all...;).

We dropped Criminal Minds for a similar reason quite a number of years ago. Excellent show with an excellent cast. But watching it felt like wading through a sewer mentally as the villains were so dark and evil.

L&Order SVU as well. All of the CSI shows. My wife does some court appointed stuff and it is just so "other worldly". I can't take the hour to recover from the depression of it all anymore.

Maybe because I have small kids, but I've fallen into this as well.... I read an article not too long ago that there's a push to remove CNN from airports for similar reasons. Replacing it with HGTV or something similar that doesn't get people all riled up before they fly.

This is a huge issue for me on Facebook. I've tried to keep my feed as positive and non-graphic/contentious as possible but every now and then a friend will share a graphic 'news story' (someone hit by a car, or some other disturbing imagery) that I have zero interest in seeing. My options seem to be to remove that person from my feed altogether or nothing. I've reported such stories to FB as being violent, or graphic, and after they review they claim the images do not violate any terms of service and are appropriate for their platform. Would give up FB altogether if not for parents and friends who rely on it to stay in touch and see pics of the kids.

Yeah I stay off of Facebook for the most part. We use group text chats and google photo sharing. Works well enough :)

Wow, where were you a week ago when people were calling me a fool for avoiding the various rated r shows on hbo and showtime for exactly this reason?

As you said... not enough time and don't need the mental take me down.

Csi and the likes, maybe 2 episodes lifetime. However that video on YouTube of all the ending sayings is hilarious.

Tv should be about making people happy. In my opinion of course.

If I want death drama and sex there are films.

My wife and I must be the only people on the planet not on FB. We never got into the social media thing. At first it was a conscious effort to delay our daughter's exposure and then age and laziness kicked. It wasn't worth the effort to learn the new tech.

With regard to the tv shows and graphic downers, the show that I was drawn to but each episode required recovery time was the HBO Original series True Detective with Woodey Harelson and Matthew McConoughey. That was a freaky show.

I'm not on Facebook either. It's a cesspool. Keeping up with old and new friends seems like a great thing but that's 2% of it anymore. No thanks.

I agree with all the comments here, I guess I'm able to seperate fiction from real news. Choosing what to watch (Netflix, Amazon, etc) vs turning on whatever formulaic crap is on CBS helps too.

Called 'The King of Tears' and it's about how/why country music is so good at pulling on emotional heartstrings. Really good stuff. Nice counterpart to Gladwell's previous episode about 'genius' and how a song like Hallelujah represents how time plays a significant role in the production of genius.

This guy needs to get someone else to read his material for him. I could only listen to about a minute of Hallelujah, and only that much because I like Elvis Costello. His voice alone is enough to send me into a deep depression.

Gladwell sounds like a South Park adult for sure - but worth listening to.

I go for walks in the forest every day. That helps. But, then it is back to....well...you know.

Anyway, try this. Bittersweet but nice.....

all caught up on Gladwell, poignant episode

I liked when he broke down the top 50 rock songs vs top 50 country songs

says a lot about how people who primarily listen to these styles see the world . . .

I like his topics and content. For me, though, it's similar to my preference of hearing a great singer sing a great songwriter's (but bad vocalist's) lyrics.
