Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman is the No. 1 NFL analyst on FOX, but he’s not afraid to criticize his own employer.

Aikman ripped FOX for hiring Skip Bayless away from ESPN and giving Bayless his own First Take knockoff show on FOX Sports 1. Aikman has disliked Bayless since the 1990s, when Bayless wrote a book about the Cowboys that included unsubstantiated rumors that Aikman is gay.

“To say I’m disappointed in the hiring of Skip Bayless would be an enormous understatement,” Aikman told Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated. “Clearly, [Fox Sports president of national networks] Jamie Horowitz and I have a difference of opinion when it comes to building a successful organization. I believe success is achieved by acquiring and developing talented, respected and credible individuals, none of which applies to Skip Bayless.”

Aikman has long maintained that Bayless is an irresponsible, unethical journalist and shouldn’t have a platform at any media outlet. Aikman will continue to say that now, even though Bayless is now a FOX Sports colleague

Skip Bayless has zero credibility and is a grade A a-hole just like stephen a. smith...

You simply can't make this stuff up. This is the first I ever heard anything about this. LOL. Happily, like most people I never read a Skip Bayless-authored book so there's the crux of the matter, I suppose.

I have never met a single human being that has said the comment "I like Skip Bayless". He is a worthless troll. The worst thing for Stephen A. was Bayless leaving because he made Smith look BRILLIANT. The guy is dumber than a club, whiny and just downright obnoxious with his stupidity.

Aikman is spot on.

what is the point of hiring Bayless is beyond me. sometimes you wonder how TV execs ever got to where they are.

I always liked Aikman even though he was a cowboy. NOW I really like him. Bayless is an ass and always has been. He sucked when he was at the ft worth star telegram and nothing has changed.

I'm giggling at anyone who thinks Aikman is a paragon of honesty or journalistic integrity. He makes Bayless look like Walter Cronkite. And he needs to get over his insecurity over his sexuality.

You might want to hold on that comment: Troy has had a zillion women, most of them beautiful. I doubt the man has one bit of insecurity over his sexuality. If it was a front, it was the best front in the history of fronts, makes Tom Cruise look like a rookie.

You really can't reason with some people, can you? If he had no insecurity over his sexuality why would he give one thought to Skip Bayless or say anything about him? Troy is one of the worst "commentators" on tv, he never should have been hired.

Because it's slander. He isn't gay, which makes calling him gay, slander, IF he isn't gay. By this argument, you can simply call everyone "gay", whether they are straight, OR gay. As a commentator, I actually agree with you...Troy is basically late to the show with his observations during the game and provides little if any insight into anything that can influence the outcome of a game, like a Chris Collinsoworth OR a Todd Blackledge does.

Is it slander to call anybody something that they are not? Serious question.

Who knows. If a guy isn't gay, and he's a famous quarterback in Dallas, and you call him gay, I don't know what that is, other than being wrong. I am certain that it's wrong, because Aikman was dating Lorie Morgan at the time, I believe, and I'm pretty sure she was never a beard.

So if I wrote a book and while using your real name, employer, etc... claiming you to be a volunteer Sybian machine tester with your own ass, though it may not be true, you'd be cool with that?

I really don't know. I guess where I am going with it is if it is slander just because he is being called gay. Would it be slander is he called him a porcupine? What makes it cross the line into slander?

Here are the basics on Defamation:
Brian C. Pascale
Libel / Slander Lawyer

"Defamation is a false statement of fact against an individual’s character or reputation, either intentionally or negligently published to a third person, holding the defamed person up to ridicule, contempt, hatred, shame, or disgrace. There are two types of defamation: Slander and Libel. Slander is an untrue spoken statement about a person that harms their reputation and standing in their community. A person injured by slander can bring a civil lawsuit against the party that made the false statement.

Where a person is defamed in writing, it is called libel. Libel also includes television broadcasts. In many ways libel is more serious because it is more likely to reach a far greater audience. In New York a libeled person’s damages are presumed because the defamatory statement is preserved for a greater period of time.

It is important to note that the statute of limitations for defamation is different in each state. A statute of limitations is the time that a civil or criminal action must be brought forward. The limitations period begins when a defamatory statement is communicated to someone other than the plaintiff. For instance, in New York, New Jersey, and California the statute of limitations is one year. However, in Washington and Indiana it is two years. Because the time to bring an action defamation is shorter than a negligence action, it is imperative that a person who believes they have been defamed speak with an attorney immediately."

I assisted my brother in writing several articles on this topic. Two of them are listed below:

(2) http://www.suite101.com/content/will-justice-be...

I guess it would come down to trying to prove damages. Aikman could very easily prove that Bayless's claim that Aikman was a porcupine was false and that Bayless knew or should have known it was false. But it would probably be pretty hard to prove any damages as a result. But being labeled as gay, especially in a macho sport like football at the time the allegation was made, maybe damages would be easier to prove.

The real question that needs to be addressed is who is the bigger a-hole, Bayliss or Smith? I'm calling it a tie.

Got it everybody, thanks. So being called gay could be slander because it could damage his reputation. Interesting.

Aikman is a fabulously successful on air talent, as least so far as this suggests. It seems extra troubling that Bayless just showed up on Fox 1, since it is obviously too late for Aikman to walk and be on the air this season. This will be fun. Does Troy have a long term contract which would make him "un-buy-out-able?" He could walk.

I applaud Troy for recognizing that Bayless committed a horrible slander of gay people everywhere by suggesting Aikman is gay. :)
