FC: Penn State has won the trademark rights to “Happy Valley”

Greedy bastards. Unbelievable
Fascinating. Word of warning to local businesses and putative "student-athletes": Don't make any commercials suggesting that you are "Happy Valley's favorite" anything.

What piece of the pie does state college get. I hope they were not sleeping at the wheel

Wasn't a previous effort denied?? How can the university trademark a term which is used for a geographic area that extends beyond the university?

I wonder how many cease and desist orders various central PA businesses will get

Good for them. BWAHAHA!

So apparently the trademark allows the university to use "Happy Valley" on apparel only. From the CDT.....

“We are pleased that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has approved our trademark for use of the term ‘Happy Valley’ on apparel,” university spokesman Wyatt DuBois said Wednesday. “As we have stated previously, our goal has always been to protect the term ‘Happy Valley’ from nefarious use not consistent with Penn State or the community’s values.”

Seems as though the university has appointed itself as the guardian of community values.

I've owned HappyValleyHoops.com for a dozen years, although I don't do much with it anymore. I wonder if they'll tell me to shut it down.

Lol, yes they trademarked it simply to protect the term from nefarious use. From the guys who threw Penn State's name under the bus, on purpose.

If you don't use your trademark in commerce for a sufficient period of time, you run the risk that a court will hold you have abandoned it in the event of litigation over the trademark.

A section of the city I live in (Lafayette, CA) has long been known as Happy Valley. There is a Happy Valley Elementary School there.
Lafayette is that as in Marquis de Lafayette?
I used to run stores in Livermore and Modesto. That is close by right?

Back in the late 70’s early 80’s there was a auto repair shop in Bellefonte with the name “The Bug Shop”. VW stepped in an made the owner change the name! “Bug” must have been trademarked.

And then there are the Happy Valley Amusement Parks in China.

"Happy Valley is a chain of amusement parks located in various cities of China. The first park opened in 1998 in Shenzhen, Guangdong province. Since then six more amusement parks have opened in Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai, Wuhan, Tianjin and Chongqing and one is under construction in Nanjing."

A year ago, I couldn’t find a shot glass in town with a PSU logo on it. So I bought one with HV and Happy Valley. Now I better make sure my wife doesn’t accidentally drop it in the garbage disposal. Damn!!
