Bush league tactics.
Bush league tactics.
this is the part I don't like though, "Dickens worried about his scholarship offer, but Edsall called on New Year’s Day to assure Dickens the school still wanted him and his scholarship was safe, his parents said."It's tough. Kids to it, and coaches do it also. But, it's tougher when a coach does it to a kid who has been committed for so long.
Sounds like a great kid who would be a great teammate. You'd think Edsel would be happy to have a kid like that on the squad. Or for that matter, ANYONE who may be willing to play at UConn.
Terrible, terrible timing by Edsal and his group. Be great to offer this kid a preferred walk on at PSU.
Can't be. I remember Vicki Tripponey and Mark Emmett saying that he was exactly what a college coach should be.
What a douchebag.
Edsall is a dirtbag, always was, always will be.
Different coach, different sport, same bush league tactics...The new womens lacrosse coach at Virginia Tech took over last year and cut loose all of his predecessors verbal offers. He then proceeded to actively poach other schools recruits and accept transfers of collegiate players that were on other NCAA school rosters.
I know several players and parents that were in complete panic mode last summer because most of the slots for their daughter's recruiting classes had already been filled for more than a year prior.
Recruiting is out of control and the NCAA enables sleazy coaches like John Sung and Randy Edsall.
The coaches associations of both mens and womens programs have proposed measures to curb early recruiting and bring some sanity to the process for the benefit of players, parents, schools etc and the NCAA ignores it.
Here's my take. They strung the kid along because they hadn't heard from kids that were rated higher on their "draft chart" so to speak. So, they keep the kid on the line as long as possible. Then, when Edsall hears from the other kid that he wants to attend/accept his offer, Edsall makes the difficult call to the kid in the article.
Pretty much the exact same thing happened to a kid my son went to school with when Akron hired Bowden. He was assured then the scholarship was pulled a couple weeks before signing day. He ended up going D-2...started four years and was All Conference, Academic All Conference and Academic All American. He was a great kid that did everything right like this kid and was a very good football player.

Two different stories, imoWe did not receive any negative publicity but Donte Raymond "flipped" to Delaware after Franklin was hired. He was probably the lowest rated recruit in that class when Franklin was hired.

Stop making winning a priority for a coach to keep their job, and some of this stuff dissipates.
But was he assured by Franklin he would have a scholarship? Did Franklin tell him he wouldn't have a scholarship? Did he transfer on his own? The two stories are apples and oranges but nice try.We did not receive any negative publicity but Donte Raymond "flipped" to Delaware after Franklin was hired. This sure won't help Edsall w/ NJ recruiting in the future. Word gets around and HS coaches steer their kids away from programs who do this stuff.
