Seems a stretch to believe Japan is going to want to host people from around the world in eight months.

Why? Japan has handled COVID just fine, very few deaths and they estimate that 50% of Tokyo has been infected. They did very little in regards to lockdowns, masks, etc.
Well, that’s not quite true. SARS scared the crap out of them (and Taiwan), and they were ready when this thing hit - and did not believe the Chinese for a second. They regularly wear masks to protect others from common illnesses and kept that up.
The Japanese are not an impossible to govern rabble like large swathes of our country

This will be me at the BJC...

Your first point is something a lot of people have neglected to mention when speaking about East Asian countries and their response to Covid. One of the primary reasons South Korea was able to deal with Covid as effectively as they did was because of the measures taken after the MERS outbreak in 2015. Add in some cultural elements and you can understand why they fared so much better than us.

It makes sense Japan would fare better than the US for a host of reasons and the discussion is only an academic one. Maybe this is an opportunity to break the model, which doesn't really work. Countries spend $$ they don't have hosting the games. I don't have the data but I strongly suspect most don't make any money and the infrastructure they build never provides a decent ROI. Sure the tourists are nice for a while and they might come back.

Why not social distance the sports....ie various cities/countries host different sports? Share the the burden. Throw in the "we are all in this together" which might be a better alternative to all or nothing, which is where we are headed

The Japanese (or Japs as Gilman likes to call them :) ) eat a much healthier diet than ours and they are much thinner on average than us. I would venture to say that they are also healthier on average. It is hard to leave that out of the equation.

Don’t be surprised if the trials are moved to Iowa! Big Tens moved, too. PSU does not want the tournaments without fans. No money to be made.

Vaccines are quite different from oral and injectable pharmaceutical products. Every person has a unique immune system. It is occasionally the case that one race will have a immunologic response that is significantly different from other races. A company that I was working for back in the 90’s got dinged by FDA for failing to properly analyze clinical data on a new vaccine among the various races. After additional studies were completed, it turned out that people of Polynesian decent had immune systems that did not respond well to the vaccine. One must always consider that a particular virus may effect one race more aggressively than another. Epidemiologists will tell you that the story of any pandemic can only be written several years after the outbreak. Time will tell how well the Japanese did compared to America.

You mean the athletes or fans? Because they're definitely going to host the athletes. They even announced a week or so ago that a full stadium of fans is not out of the question. That'd surprise me but they've lost hundreds of billions already. The Olympics will happen.
The athletes are going to have to do their part tho while in the Olympics village. No orgies with hosts of foreign women and/or men until at least after their event lol.

The Olympics have become by far my favorite sporting event lol. Bow they're starting to turn it into the x games trying to reach the younger viewer which sucks. Track and field, wrestling, weightlifting, basketball, rowing, even swimming lol, I love it all.
Sucks the worlds fastest man, from the US, is suspended for it damn. Rugby, the US baseball sucks, but it's nice seeing foreign stars who will be in the MLB in the future, hell im even into soccer!!!! Women's soccer that is lol. Our team is awesome and they have some hotties out there lol.
Can't believe they tried to get wrestling out of the Olympics a few years ago and the six weight classes suck.
I find it amazing seeing all these beautiful women from all over the world in all the different events with their different body types. It's crazy.

Curtis, are you the cabdriver I met in LA? You had nonstop opinions on the drive, too. “Aaaand another thing ... Don’t get me started ... The problem with that is ...” :)

We all know Dave is busy running a Fortune 500 company in our home state. We need companies like his.

Leaders delegate.

Dave needs a GIF, he calls his hand pick IT guy. The IT guy calls Zerox PARC in Palo Alto, California. The GIF is forwarded, he posts it for us knuckleheads.

Dave feeds us great content for a good laugh and keeps things light as we are slowly going our of our minds in 2020.

It's a win win. That is until I wake my half asleep wife up to show what he posted.

What I want from Dave for Christmas is to allow me to follow him into side door of the BJC for the Olympic Trials. Like him I have four seats lower bowl. Christmas in April.

You are welcome, glad you are well. My wife has a coworker' whose dad who died at 63 and knew another individual at 63 who passed.

On the good side my college roommate, after being hospitalized is back to work.

Sorry folks for me stateing that here.

Dave, Thanks for your posts, and I did wake up the wife over one the other night.

I just would love to get together in State College with as many posters from this board that we could have. The Olympic Trials would be a pretty great time and place.
I have tickets! Though I kind of doubt I will be able to use them.

It is the Only reason I'm getting a shot(s).

I'll have my "papers" with me and a picture of getting a shot in my left cheek.

I'm in, with a few other non members but you may recognize some of them. Or atleast the voice!

You saw at the last Rokfin NLWC event, there were a handful of people sitting in what looked like penalty box. I have no idea who they were but assumed they may have been friends or family. All had masks. To me that was a good sign of a slow opening.

At my age and health, I would never be one of them. My choice. However by April, I am seriously hoping I can rejoin Society and the Olympic Trials is my hope.

In the case at hand, I have no doubt that Cael has a Plan to allow as many people attend as safety possible.

I would guess no fans. But if fans are allowed you will need proof of vaccine. And that will rule out a ton (most) of fans.

I would even try to fly out from San Diego. I have never been to State College, or anywhere close. I did go to Chicago one winter when I competed in the NJCAA tournament in 1984. WAY too cold for my liking.
