Midnighter, was it public knowledge that he was very ill?

I don't think so but again, I don't follow ESPN or their personalities that much. However, I assume something like that would be well known in the sports community in general if at some point it was made public.

Thanks, That's why I'm asking, I also seldom follow the sports World According to Garp. It's basically these days full of bull $hit, similar to the Kane trial.

I actually always liked Saunders. Thought he took the emotion out of reporting and tried to get to the facts and look at the overall view of the story. He was a college hockey player. And I will always remember him hosting espn sunday reporters after the Sandusky scandal broke. All the reporters wanted to hang Joe and Saunders was surrounded by people with pitchforks and torches calling for Joe's head and he closed the tv show with this... ESPN's John Saunders punctuated Sunday's "Sports Reporters" by reminding us not to forget "all the good Paterno has done at Penn State."

Thank you bwifan, my sediments about Sanders also. To me, he seemed like a gentleman among the many fools at espn.

Just saw that he signed a contract extension with ESPN in 2015; would suggest the AIDS cause of death on his Wiki page is wrong.

Saunders was working on a book with John Bacon (he is the author who wrote 4th and Long, that chronicled Penn State's 2012 football team alongside a few other B1G teams from that season). The book is scheduled for release in spring 2017.

The book was intended to be about Saunders' battle with depression over the last few decades.

Hopefully, depression isn't related to this rather sudden death. But it could be. 61 is still kind of young.

RIP. I thought he was a good announcer.

Wasn't aware of his battle with depression. Everyone is basically talking about his bubbly father figure personality and how they considered him a mentor. Loved to play jokes on people.

It's a shame regardless. He was a very likeable personality. RIP and condolences to his family and friends.

Wow - John Saunders was such a class act on air and a welcomed, refreshing oasis of decency, competence and charm at that network.

He will be sorely missed by many, including the enormous numbers of people he helped outside of the broadcast booth.

RIP John Saunders

"John was an advocate for juvenile diabetes research and was a founding board member of the Jimmy V Foundation for cancer research, a charity that has raised almost 90 million dollars with 100 percent of the charity funding cancer research."

Friend of mine is an internist with a rather large practice. He says that the depression cases he deals with exceed every other type of malady he encounters combined. Estimates it is 75 percent of his practice. It's affected my family and I'm sure many/most here can relate. RIP Mr. Saunders.

In the times I came across him while I worked there years ago, he was nothing but friendly and engaging. He was a mentor to many many on-air people who went through those doors there. In this age where we have such classless clowns on the air, he was the direct opposite. Nothing but class and gone way too soon.

I echo the thoughts of many in this thread. Very sad to hear. He leaves behind a wife and two daughters. Thoughts and prayers with his family. RIP

It's a tragic loss for his family, but for us, even if he didn't have a family, he's still a good man. That's all that matters to me.

I will share other's sentiments: Gone too soon and a class act. He will be missed.

Really surprised. Didn't realize he was 61, but he was a fixture since the early 80's. He always seemed to be quite professional.
