Feel bad about JJ leaving

are we “fans” partly responsible? I look at my own college age sons. I think about how they would handle message board negativity. Maybe we should be more thoughtful about this?

I wish JJ all the best no matter where he goes. He seems like a solid guy. That said, if he's being influenced by moronic message board posts then I feel sorry for him. Thinking fans are responsible is a bit over dramatic. He likely realized the emergence of Dotson and Shorter didn't bode well for him.

If this Board had ANY impact on JJ’s leaving PSU then he has much bigger problems than dropping a few passes.

Personally, I wish him well and I hope EVERYONE remembers his TD catch against Iowa when they think of him.

Yeah but you’re just glossing over the fact that this board is a vitriolic cesspool at times. denigration of coaches, players and public figures is one of the cornerstones of this board.

Mike Geiski disagrees....when people lose faith in you, prove to them they are wrong and enjoy serving them crow...well done.

I feel bad about it too, if it’s as we assume. I regret these kids don’t have the time to grow they used to, which I definitely benefitted from. But that’s just not today’s game. Last season was his year to bring it and show it. All relied on him doing it. He had a disappointing season. That sucks for him and others. I’d love to see him return and succeed and that seemed the default-he sure hasn’t shown he’s ready for the NFL. If we’re reading this properly, problem seems to be next year is the next guys’ year, not a do-over for his disappointing season. A change may present s great opportunity for him and that other program, which may not have the same level of talent ready to take its turn.

Yes, all the players make the most important decisions of their lives after reviewing this board. Amazing how highly people on this board think of themselves in the scheme of PSU football.

Let's be clear. JJ is leaving because he did not feel he was developing like he should be. Whether thats his own fault, coaches etc who knows. An answer will probably come after next year. Perhaps the final straw was yet another WR coach coming in, his third in 3 years.

I’d feel bad if Shorter et al got less snaps because a disgruntled player returned. He graduated and he’s not Godwin.

This board needs a bevy of Shrinks!
JJ graduated and gets a free year of grad school....
JJ has a life, therefore he has nothing to do with this board.

He wasn’t “developing” like he should be? That’s why he left? He couldn’t catch passes — which is kind of an important skill to have for a wide receiver. How could that be anybody else’s fault but his? And maybe it’s not his “fault” either; it could just be a skill he doesn’t have. I hope he does well wherever he goes, but if he suddenly starts catching the ball I don’t think that will “answer” anything about our coaching staff.

Yes.... the bitterness he expresses is incredible... really.,,, uh huh.

"Would also like to thank the ridiculous fan base for all the support. Seriously, you guys are everything. PSU fans are second to none and I greatly appreciated them for a tremendous journey."

Most of the players know that a good percentage of the posters here have tin foil in their windows and keep the lights off for fear of being seem by someone. They don't come here. When one does, as witnessed a few days back, they quickly learn that many of the posters here are non compliant and don't come back. There are some posters here that are rational and insightful, but it is getting harder to see through the forrest of negative one noters.
Same with TOS.

Come on now. The median age of this board is like, what, 85 years old? I doubt 18-22 year old players are reading it.
That being said, our board is NO DIFFERENT than any other college football message board. Actually, there are much worse. Any parent or coach worth a darn is telling these kids to take the media, both mainstream sports media as well as social media/message boards, with a huge grain of salt. I would bet they are encouraged to simply not read them at all, message boards especially.

Dropped balls by players could be for numerous reasons. It was contagious. A WR coach was fired. You may not think it had to with coaching, but JF may. It was also more than just dropped balls. He didn't develop into what he thought he should. Who's fault is that? Probably a little bit of everyone's. I think he's just too slow. Time will tell.

It's never our fault.

No I doubt it, at least I would hope not because its not going to be any different where he would end up.
Yes I think we should.

Its not just this board, it doesn't make it right but really look around on some other boards after a loss. Its pretty much the same thing.

No. A change of scenery may help as his issues were all in his head. Hopefully he works them out and tears it up.

Seems like a really good kid. I wish him nothing but success going onward. That said, he didn’t seem to be able to get open, had trouble catching the ball, and doesn’t seem to have great hands. Those are not bad traits for the average person or while going through one’s day to day life, but it’s a pretty deadly combination for a wide receiver.

I think it's wrong to view JJ leaving as a bad thing. He will always be a Penn State football player. He's been part of some really big wins here -- that catch at Iowa is one of the greatest plays in recent PSU history. He's conducted himself with honor on and off the field. He's earned a degree and is now going to go earn another. He has accomplished a tremendous amount with his football scholarship and now he's on to the next chapter.

At the same time, I don't think there's anything wrong for fans to discuss JJ's strengths and weaknesses as a player. That is one of the things fans do. We're wrong a lot and sometimes we're right.

Everybody has their own physical limitations and no amount of hard work (and he is a hard worker no question) can completely transform you into a different kind of athlete. JJ is not really a natural football player IMHO (just by contrast, look at Dotson or Friermuth, things seem to come more easily for them) but through hard work JJ made himself into a very good player.

I don't think he's an NFL player but who knows, maybe he can go to another program and have a breakthrough year If he goes somewhere and becomes an all-American I will be really happy for him.

There's no reason for negative feelings. He's doing the grad transfer -- like most grad transfers -- because PSU is flush with talent at the wideout position and it's not clear whether he will get enough playing opportunities if he returns. PSU will be fine and he will hopefully benefit as well.

I would think with kids like this who have spent a large part of their life around social media, the hype and criticisms from a message board would be taken in stride, especially given his performance on the field, which he has some control over.
I do wish him well, but wonder about how well this staff recruits and coaches bigger receivers given our track record with him, Blacknail (sp), and Charles. We'll see with Shorter. This group does miss the presence and role model of an ARob, Godwin, or even Hamilton.

JJ is a great kid who aspires to play on Sundays. College is a proving group for post college. What he gets on Saturdays is just a fraction of what he will get on Sundays. He better get used to it or will be working in an office three years from now.

An easy solution is to catch catchable balls. That won't be tolerated in the NFL. Great learning opportunity.

Not 100% sure but I think his brother George Johnson played for Rutgers about 9 or 10 years ago.
