Fewer Contests in 20-21 Season?

It appears D2 is headed for fewer contests next season. This falls in line with some other suggestions floating about to limit the amount of travel by teams. I wonder if D1 will approach the season with a similar philosphy?

Quote from LOW places in State College where Zoom audio drifts >

“______ has been on many high level Zoom calls in the last week and it is almost a certainty that there will be NO fall sports at Penn State - this includes football and wrestling. PSU is trying to come up with an alternate to salvage a partial season by playing in the winter/spring of 2021, but it is not looking good for anything this year.”

This seems a bit less like a rumor and a bit more like the COVID version of group think!

Since when has wrestling been a FALL sport?

NWCA + coaches considering moving wrestling to one-semester sport (Jan start).

No football with lots of fans, lots of businesses in State College are going bust.

Interesting. I wonder if we would see more dual football/wrestling athletes in college if this goes through?

The opposite might happen since wrestling would likely conflict with spring football drills.

If anything, it might mean fewer dual sport athletes.

If wrestling started in January, the season would go thru April and possibly into May. Last year, PSU Football spring practice started 3/13.

We are hearing the one semester option as well, although nobody knows anything for sure as well.

Personally, I'm all for it.

Considering this has been bandied about for a few years now pre-Covid (and by the same people promoting it now) if it is successful, we might be looking at the future of the sport at the collegiate level. I'd like to see what it looks like - the season is too long currently IMO.

Given the circumstances, it would be a good time to try two things I’ve been wanting to see for a while. Spring Semester season and try to push the NCAA Wrestling tourney until after the basketball tourney.

I’ve also thought that day long, four team/tri-meets would be a way to cut down on travel days. I believe that the NCAA rules limit the number of competition days, not matches. Say schedule two upper BigTen teams and two lower BigTen teams, or one lower BigTen team and one regional team. Do it on a Saturday instead of the usual Friday/Sunday combo.

From a Freestyle/Greco scheduling perspective, would it be likely they would push the annual US Open (and obviously the Olympic Trials) back until around Memorial Day? I suppose this not a big deal for most NCAA programs but guys that are heavily interested in making the world team would have to take Olympic Redshirts.
