ASHTON JEANTY FILM STUDY

See link. We specifically scouted the only two games this season where Jeanty avg. less than 5 yards a carry (1st UNLV game and San Diego St.) Sorry to be boring but it basically comes down to overcompensating to stop the run (luckily BSU doesn’t have a passing game to keep us honest) and whether our 2nd and 3rd level defenders can fit properly and tackle in space (which is somewhat terrifying).

Jeanty is very Barry Sanders-ish not in run style but in game rhythm : 1 yard, -1 yards, 2 yards, 80 yards.

Paterno assigned Walker Lee Ashley to the Hero position in the Sugar Bowl to mirror Herschel Walker. The latter was contained and we won our first national title.

He's got this slippery, elusive quality to him. I feel like their QB will pull it some early if we focus heavily and they have success. Probably a good bit of PA as well. Still, Jeanty is gonna run it 25+ regardless.

I assume we play a straight up 4-3 much of this game. I'd even be interested in a 5 man front sometimes. I didn't see any Counters in the study, but I suspect they install it. Counter has been a big run play against us this year (USC nightmares still).

We might see Tyler Elsdon a little more in this game. Maybe move Carter to OLB?

Elsdon seems regulated to purely "7/10s of the 2nd team defense is in" duty now. If we see him more, that probably means we are up big late.

Carter to LB would be an interesting wrinkle, but I'll believe it when I see it (not counting the 3rd down package where he roams). Even if he is at LB, he'd probably go back to Will. Play the box and chase the sideline stuff.

I'm a hard no against moving Carter to LB for more than when he roams in his current role. Rojas has to stay in his lanes....if he does so we'll be fine. But realistically Jeanty will have one or two big runs.

I'm probably more concerned with Rojas wrapping up than staying in his lanes. I'm hopeful that we "play the run" more than "line up in our defense". Curious how our DL does early. I feel like we adjust at some point, but how long does it take?

And, will it matter? Can they stop our offense?

Right that's why he's better outside. Keep him free to roam.

Not a great breakdown. To start with, the notion the this guy should have won the Heisman is ridiculous.

Then showing a breakdown claiming that a linebacker doesn't get over the top fast enough when he's getting tackled by the OL is about all I need to see.

Elsdon? Why? At least Deluca knows where he should be and doesn't get taken out the play as

Deluca/Elsdon will be a problem even if Rojas stays in his lanes. They are a weak spot on this defense

Damn, interesting game coming up. Apparently according to all the message boards, the entire game will be played by the Penn State defense against Ashton Jeanty...no special teams, and Penn States offense will not be playing football this Tuesday. Just Boise State offense against Penn State defense.

Hang 45 on them and move on to ND/Georgia.

The key to slowing Jeanty down is having a lot of bodies in the area. he is fantastic, perhaps the best ever, at tackles after contact. And he has great vision, picking holes. He is too elusive in space so you can give him space, you have to hem him in. That leaves the CBs to cover a lot of space because the Ss will have to key on the run. And he's only fumbled once all year.

Lots of bodies, no turnovers, minimize penalties, don't give up big scores.

Can we afford an all out rush on the QB at the expense of sealing the edge? Can we risk blitzing LBs and DBs?

OSU had Caleb downs spy on Warren. Should we have a spy on Jeanty? If so who?

Play them straight up and beat them physically at the line of scrimmage. Score points on offense. Last time I checked, we get the ball also

That isn't the strategy I'd use. I'd have the DL play D to stop the run. By that I mean I'd preach gap integrity and only rush the passer when it is a for sure passing down or the threat of Jeanty running has passed. I'd do the same for the safeties. Play the run and plug holes. That way, you've got 7 people stopping the run. I wouldn't adjust off of that until Boise shows they can beat us with the pass or if it is third and long.
