PRIBULA PACKAGE FILM STUDY

See link above. There's been enough smoke in the offseason of a possible 'Pribula Package' that we wanted to explore the surface-level, elementary stuff Pribula ran under Yurcich (and the Seider-Howle hybrid) and showcase the 'advanced class' mobile qb concepts Kotelnicki utilized at Kansas. Interestingly, the guy who might benefit most from a Pribula package is Singleton since so much of these option variations mirror what he feasted on in high school.

Fun Stat we couldn't fit in:

'Breakaway Gains' on Designed Runs in 2023

Allen: 11, Singleton 9, Pribula 6...but Allen and Singleton each had 110+ more carries than Pribula.

Yes, these are always awesome and appreciate the content and your expertise. As a coach, what is the number of plays you might run with Pribula as to not get Allar our of a rhythm? It seems like coaches always struggle with how much you can bench your #1 for different packages and the like.

i'm all for giving Beau a chance to start, the way he can run the Defense couldn't key Singleton, I think we could count on Nick getting a couple open seams, like he did in the Rose bowl and thus have long runs.

Good video. I honestly like the option plays AK ran at Kansas. Diversity of scheme is a good thing. Capitalizing on the weapons we have is always good.

I get frustrated that we don't see the second team QB until the 4th quarter vs weak teams. IMO Pribula should get almost a full half against Bowling Green & Kent State.

While I can certainly empathize with the thought of giving the backup QB meaningful playing time, unless DA is performing like Kerry Collins circa 1994, he too is going to need significant reps if he is going to be the stature of QB that we all envisioned.

And while I believe BP's dual threat capability will stress defenses that are primarily designed to stop a DA led offense, I believe that the better teams will install defensive packages designed to neutralize his strengths if he proves to be a significant weapon.

I think BP certainly brings a different dynamic to the offense. I am not a big fan of two QB offenses but in this case, because the two are so different in talent, I can see it working. Teams will have to game plan for it and that takes time away from simply game planning for DA. Regardless, when a defense sees BP, they are going to think run first, pass second. DA will make them play pass first, run second in terms of how they cover the QB. A big key will be how passing accurate BP will be so that they can't stack the box when he's at QB. I can also see them both being on the field, with BP at WR where they can switch pre-snap. Lots of interesting and exciting options.

Wally Richardson had 0 tds in 1994. Probably kept bgdan up at night.

This. I understand and agree with the replies that Allar needs a ton of reps and polish as well, and we don't want to stunt his growth. But, we saw what happened a couple yrs back when we had zero backups ready @ Iowa and the whole thing was a train wreck. Beau needs to be utilized enough, and in different ways, for him to be something else the defense has to prepare for. Make the opponent have to spend some of their game week on him, if possible. Over the last several years, I don't think we have done a very good job of this -- making it challenging to scheme and prepare for us. Our offense seemingly is pretty bland. But, AK certainly ran a creative offense at KU, including utilizing the mobility in his QBs.

Agree. But lets not lose context. The reason why PSU didn't have a decent QB is because Will Levis left for Kentucky and our #3 was in the doghouse vs Iowa. We ended up putting a #4 into the game in a critical situation, deep in our own endzone, against one of the best defenses in the conference.

I would think now that Drew has a year under his belt, we may see more of Pribula anyway. But the new OC may require some time and reps for Drew to be at his best so maybe that change keeps Pribula on the bench minus this package? Interesting question for the staff.

Bring back the lion package that everyone complained about??

Where is #3 at today? #4 is at a P5 school.

Taquan is at K-State after leaving UConn. He'll probably be a backup to Avery as a Senior. Christian Villieux is at Ga State (after having left Pitt). So both are now in their third stops.

Very true. I still think Beau can be utilized in specific packages and plays -- whether that be red zone, plus down and distance, etc. That is for AK to figure out.

Yep, but any success and the competition will have a run defense package for when they see BP take the field. They'll know the percentages and tendencies for a BP offense versus a DA offense. I'd like to see BP run a few plays out of the slot as a receiver too. That way, they can have BP in the game with DA and won't know who is the QB until the ball is snapped.

AK has to call it this way. I believe we ran on 1st down 66% of the time last year. Article, podcast, somewhere somebody said it.

We have to be a threat to throw at anytime. The game management style didn't suit Allar. The near even split of rushes favored Allen, but we kept trotting Singleton out there to do the same thing, but for 2 less yards. I understand we couldn't bench him outright, but I certainly didn't feel we took advantage of either skill set properly.

AK probably feels like a kid in a candy store. This is easily the most talented team he's ever had his hands on.

I'd like to volunteer, if CJF is reading this, to put together an opposition research plan. In other words, the week PSU is playing WVU, I'll be putting together the game plan for BGSU. The week we are playing BGSU, I'll be game planning for Kent. The week we play kent, I'll be game planning for ILL. What I mean is I'll act like I am the OC and DC of the upcoming opposing teams. I'd have my stats and tendencies on down, distance, field position, personnel package, and formation so I know what to call against PSU. That way, the coaches can call plays that are counter to what "the book" says PSU will play.

Kidding. I am 100% certain they have a team of people doing this.

Yessir. I'm sure most of the people who do this has forgotten more than people like myself have ever even known. It's still fun to discuss.

It's like Cory last year. His general assessment was right: we couldn't throw down field and/or were reluctant to. He just worded it in a way that left him open to hassle and ridicule, which comes with the territory. Anybody who has worked has either done this or is lying.

Baseball has become 100% about analytics. leftie righty. average with RISP. batting in cold vs heat, dry vs. rain. I would imagine football is now even worse.

Absolutely!

The big difference in football is hitting. You can't measure the heart of a guy hitting in practice and light pads at camps. Although it's still a huge factor in the rankings because athleticism is not always teachable beyond a certain baseline.

I'm 100% against any team having a package for the backup QB--you play your starter unless he's unable to go or the game is a blowout. The package Beau ran last year wasn't preparing him if Allar went down--we've yet to see anything to suggest Beau can be a productive passer. Hopefully Drew stays upright, Beau gets a lot of playing time late in games and Allar continues to improve. All that needs to happen is for us to take the reins off of him instead of acting like an interception is the end of the world.

I disagree. Pribula brings a different skill set. He can help you win games that are tight with that skill set as a change up. That package is a part of the offense if Pribula gets the call as the #1 QB. The OC isn't going to make Pribula be Allar. There are probably some throws they feel more comfortable with Allar than Pribula and that would not likely be in the offense if Pribula is the #1 by injury or otherwise. You don't gameplan the same for different skill sets. And a pitcher doesn't throw only fastballs. Changeups keep the other team on their toes even if it isn't your #1 pitch.

we may need him against WV-they are not as good as they think they are BUT-they'll put 9 in the box to force Allar to play well on the road.

We have heard this before, it’s called the Will Levis special don’t throw the ball you are only allowed to run

Disagreement is fine. Let's see how many top teams take out their starting QB to mix things up with any regularity this year. If you need that you have huge problems offensively.

i just want to see the basics like run Singleton (and Martin) outside and Allen inside. Use a few screens early to get Allar comfortable. Stretch the field a few times in the first half.

I have not seen enough of BP to determine his ability to easily making all of the throws necessary to keep a good defense honest.

Why? We're trying to make the playoff and contend for a title. Next year which Allar may still be here shouldn't be a consideration or Allar would have started most of his freshman year

I can't believe we are this far into this "Bo's package" thread and not a single...I am not sure if I am proud or embarrassed.

Coach Codutti is awesome! I've never heard of him, so thanks for sharing this. This is fantastic film study. Is he high school coach? Such knowledge and insight into these various packages. Solid analysis without all the fluff. Really well produced.

I was excited for OC AK before, but this film study only further reinforces that. He's a creative coach that plays to his players strengths . I think we will see BP packages, and with success. It will not diminish Drew, it will make him and PSU better.

Codutti is the Head Coach at Fulshear High School outside of Houston. He is also the AD or at that school they call it Athletic Coordinator.
