Haines has 14 bouts, all but one against D1 competition, I think. He might have been left off because he hasn't been designated the starter yet?

And he has a MD over 16th ranked Model. My assumption on the starter thing was starting a match at a dual, but I could be wrong. As in someone that only wrestled opens would not be considered but someone with 8 bouts and starting for multiple dual meets would count. But who knows, hopefully we find out soon who our starter is.

We'll know about Haines in about 25 hours. I'm hoping he goes in both duals. Lewan and Saldate would be a great litmus test.

It appears possible that the new 5-bout rule for true freshman may be part of the challenges for this ranking too. He's not the obvious starter until he gets his 6th attached bout and/or he's proclaimed such by someone in authority. No worries, it'll all be clear soon enough.

Solid wins over 26(Fall) and 27(Dec) too.

A bit silly to put the rankings out then, when the criteria eliminates many of the top guys. But, whatever.

Terrell Barraclough was listed as Penn State's Starter at 157 lbs. for this coaches ranking.

Obviously it can change for the second rankings but whoever from Penn State inputs/confirms their results (probably a coach) designated Barraclough as the PSU wrestler to rank for this first release.

It's also interesting they did that since Barraclough was not eligible to be ranked as he has 8 matches but one of them is against Haines and you can't count matches against teammates or extra matches this year to avoid what happened at the last chance opens in year's past.

I prefer the BWI rankings better. They tend to be the most accurate predictor for March as early as November. At least for the PSU, Rutgers and Iowa programs

Here are the wrestlers ranked by Intermat (far left column is intermat ranking) who are not in the first coaches poll. Asterisks mean they did not have enough matches.

41 Total ranked by intermat but not in coaches ranking

32 - not enough matches (1 due to administrative error by Nebraska who had record wrong in track wrestling (Cronin))
4 - Ranked by intermat but not designated as starter by the coaching staff (Pitzer, Pitt / DePrez, Binghamton / Haines, PSU / Carr, Illinois)
2 - out more than a month with injury (1 due to administrative error by Air Force)
2 - teammate was designated as starter and ranked by in coaches poll
1 - wasn't ranked by coaches but was by Intermat (Max Maylor, Michigan 174)

Here are guys not ranked by Intermat but are in the coaches ranking. Two in bold had their teammates ranked by Intermat.

Takeaway is definitely once you get to 25-33 the coaches are definitely looking at other national rankings such as Intermat and Flo.

Once upon a time, I was really excited to see the first Coaches Ranking. No more, as it's value has taken a nose-dive over the past couple of years due to fewer bouts by wrestlers overall. The one I'm now looking most forward to is the one that will come out about February 9 or 10, which will also include the RPI.

125 No PSU
133 No PSU (RBY only has 7 bouts)
141 Beau 3rd
149 SVN tied at 11

184 No PSU (Brooks 5-1)
197 Dean 2
HWT No PSU (Kerk is 7-0)
I also saw the rankings with several Key PSU studs unranked ...... I just assumed it was Wrestlestat. ..... :) I kid :)
