Football First Penn State Football Notebook of 2023 Training Camp

Unfortunately for Beau, it’s really hard to fathom a way he wins the job outright. He could walk on water and it’s not happening.

I agree. No way he starts. I understand Franklin has to position it this way (e.g. a QB competition) but the odds are extraordinarily low Pribula becomes the starter.

Think of the uproar here if Franklin names Pribula the starter - lol. How many Heisman’s is Allar projected to win? Just because you have the look and some skill does not mean you are going to have the IT factor.
I don’t think uproar as much as disappointment. If Allar doesn't win the starting job that's a bad sign IMO and probably for a lot of people.

What if Beau starts, takes us to the natty game, and is a Heisman finalist?
That would be amazing but the discussion is the reaction if Allar doesn't win the job. That's not going to be the expectation. The initial belief will be that Allar didn't live up to the hype and we're still the third team in the conference.

So if Beau starts against WVU, passes for 350 and three or four TDs, everyone will be disappointed?

I don’t care who starts as long as he excels.

Before the game. Why are you struggling with this? The announcement won't happen after kickoff.

Allar is the anointed one. He's the one we've all been lead to believe has elite ability. Pretending that him losing the job wouldn't be considered a bad sign is....I dont know what...asinine maybe.

I agree, yet it is good to hear he is making progress which bodes well in case Allar gets dinged up and has to leave a game.
And it makes him even more worthy of the flashy BMW loaner. In 6 weeks or so some may be clamoring for him to get more snaps. Like the swallows returnong to Capistrano.....

We've learned the hard way that we need multiple game ready qbs, which may be harder to manage in the NIL/Portal era. I think Michigan picking up Tuttle from Indiana is a hedge of sorts that was designed as an extreme measure plug. Hate to show any love to Jimmah, but I think it is a pretty smart move.

It happened to us at Wisconsin years ago when Erasmus James knocked out 2 QBs on the same series. I think Chris Ganter stepped in but simply was not talented enough.

However Coach manages it, Iowa City cannot happen again. I'm glad Beau is playing well. That's why he came to PSU. He is expected to be very good.

There should not be an uproar here. The HVCAC has accused CJF repeatedly of not fostering competition at QB.

The theme here makes sense. Obviously the fans don't want to see another game where the backup comes in due to an injury to the starter at QB and looks like a deer in headlights. And just as or more obviously the coaches remember that game and want to do everything to prepare all the QB's on the roster to be ready to play in order to keep from repeating the Iowa results as they just as obviously want to win game even more than we want to see them win games.

But just as obviously the coaches believed they had Roberson somewhat prepared to play in the event that Clifford got hurt, given his 2nd year status in the program and lack of game snaps.

So I'm in the camp that won't believe that Pribula is ready to play and win a game until I actually see it happen. He seems like a talented QB with a great work ethic but actual performance is the only measure of a competent QB, backup or starter. And the reports out of camp on the QB are only that, "reports". What does anyone here expect the coaches to say?

And you're in the very small minority that won't be at least initially disappointed if Allar isn't thr starting QB...as I think you know
I am well aware of that. But my enthusiasm has been tempered by decades of experience and reality. We have had other star recruits at QB that failed to live up to expectations. I remember a high recruit QB complaining about lack of playing time when the senior starter was struggling and Joe wouldn’t play him. He finally got his shot in a game and the very first pass…..a quick out to the sideline……hit the dirt five yards in front of the receiver. The entire stadium actually laughed at him! Never saw/heard anything like that before or since.

I certainly hope Allar does well. And believe he likely will. But if Beau ends up being the Chosen One…..so be it.

All fair...just discussing the initial reaction of the masses. I'll be slightly disappointed because I have high hopes for Allar and, truthfully, I'll see it more of him flopping than Beau impressing. At least until proven otherwise.

It seems like we are going to great lengths to keep #9 happy. He's got the Beemer and has done some appearances.

The Sunday morning after a game last year a buddy went to a signing at the Student Book Store where break out sensation Abdul Carter was paired with Beau. Both are freshmen, but that was about all they had in common at the time.

Someone, somewhere has to be nudging these opportunities his way eventhough he hasn't contributed during games yet. All part of the new world of college football...

2 QB classes are a strange marriage. In today's game, the odds of both eventually playing are probably very low. However, I do feel that Pribula was brought in under the guise of "stay here for 4-5 years and we'll develop your skills, get you drafted."

CV saw the writing on the wall when he was passed by last year. At least the staff didn't waste a year of his eligibility by telling him that "he could win" the job in '23 had he stayed. I don't think Pribula expects to start this year and if he did, he would have went elsewhere to begin with.

Good to hear that Beau also looked sharp in his QB drills.
Who starts really doesn't matter to me. The important thing is 2 QBs who can run the Mike Yurcich offense and make the throws. If they both can do it, maybe this is the year for Franklin to let two QBs play. Sharing the ball has worked really well with 2 top tier running backs.

The main thing is to not have a repeat of the situation 2 years ago with a backup QB who couldn't run more than 2 or 3 plays. So really they have to get a third QB ready in case the person who doesn't start transfers out.
