If I am the czar of college football, I do full realignment. 7 major conference champs and 1 at-large makes the playoff. Here's the realignment:

Big Ten
Michigan
Michigan St
Ohio St
Minnesota
Iowa
Wisconsin
Northwestern
Illinois
Purdue
Indiana

Southwest Conference
Oklahoma
Texas
Arkansas
Oklahoma St
Texas A&M
Baylor
TCU
Kansas
Kansas St
Nebraska

SEC
Alabama
Auburn
LSU
Tennessee
Georgia
Kentucky
Vandy
Mississippi
Mississippi St
South Carolina

ACC
North Carolina
North Carolina St
Duke
Virginia
Georgia Tech
Clemson
Wake Forest
Florida
Florida St
Maryland

Big East
Penn St
Pitt
Syracuse
Boston College
West Virginia
Virginia Tech
Notre Dame
Miami
Rutgers
Temple

Pac 10
USC
UCLA
Cal
Stanford
Oregon
Oregon St
Washington
Washington St
Arizona
Arizona St

Conference USA
Iowa St
Texas Tech
Louisville
Boise St
Utah
BYU
Colorado
Colorado St
Missouri
Wyoming

Each conference plays 9 conference games and 3 at large games. No conference championship games. Conference champions go to the major bowls.

Rose:
Big Ten vs. Pac 10

Orange:
ACC vs. Big East

Sugar:
SEC vs.SWC

Fiesta:
Conference USA vs At-large

The winner of these 4 games then play in a 4 team playoff, like we have now.

Done. Now someone go make this happen.

ND to BIG

Rutgers and Temple to non-power conference. otherwise kind of the old school divisions from way back. certainly a lot cheaper for WVU

Not happening. Ever.

I like it but there would be a lot of ties w/o a conference title game

So I assume that 1 of the Wisconsin's in the Big Ten is supposed to be Indiana.

No UCF, No USF, No Utah St (who's leading the Mountain West over Boise right now). No Academies?

Florida to the ACC.

Interesting. I have to stew on it about liking it or not.

Yes fixed the Indiana thing.

Conference USA could be debated. Maybe integrate UCF, USF, Academies. Or have no 7th major conference (no Conference USA) and take 2 at large teams to the major bowls. If a non major finishes top 15, they're in.

Florida could stay SEC, and move South Carolina to the ACC.

I'll clean up these details and then submit to the powers that be.

No Houston in the B1G? Sorry, I couldn't resist!

I see you kept PSU and Rutgers together to keep the rivalry game - which is good. But I would miss the volleyball and wrestling with our current setup.

I'm still trying to get over CUSA winner getting the At-large bid. Basically a huge reward for the best runner-up which you might as well just say 2 SEC teams

I also hate our conference.

Oh, man...if I could give this multiple "likes" I would. Many, many years ago, maybe late 1990s, I came up with some similar idea which I called "The Awesome 80" - essentially the 80 best teams in college football, which would replace what was then Div 1 and is today FBS. Unfortunately, I agree, this will never happen - but it needs to.

Penn State in a big east is a fix? You should stick with “go for the ball”.

This scenario adds up to 4 playoff games to the schedule - so a team plays 12 games, 1 CCG and THEN plays up to 4 more games?

I think that is a lot to ask from a bunch of 18-22 year olds.
Yeah, i think you'd have to go back to the 11 game schedule.

I would begin by castrating Mark Emmert, with a dull knife.

It won't happen, but pretty, pretty, prettyyy good.

Way too much travel for the fans. For teams making the championship, minimum of three, maybe four games. At a certain point, attendance will either tail off, or the game(s) will be like the Super Bowl, with the stands populated by corporations and their guests, not necessarily fans of the participating teams.

It’s been done at the D2 and D3 levels for years (28 and 16 team playoffs).

It’s only adding 2 games to the current 4 team playoff now (and only for a select few of the D1 teams). Cut a cupcake week from standard schedules and you’ve only added 1 extra game. It can be done.

And no AD is going to go for that, with the amount of money that is being tossed around by television.

I don’t know. The tv money comes from conference tv deals. Those aren’t going to really change by eliminating 1 cupcake game like Bama vs the Citadel, PSU vs Akron, LSU vs Southwestern Louisiana etc. Just look at the SEC schedule this weekend.

Plus the playoffs will bring in more money. IIRC the NCAA makes 1 billion dollars off of the March Madness tournament each year.

I don't think the NCAA has any financial stake in the CFP. They don't own it like the own March Madness and the NIT. However, the NCAA does set the limit on the number of games that can be played by a team.

It won't happen, but pretty, pretty, prettyyy good.

The biggest issue with that is that the quarterfinals can't be at bowl locations. It needs to be at the higher seed. Arguably the semifinals as well. FCS has the perfect model with 24 teams but ADs won't give up those money making home games that no one wants to see.

Your idea is a major improvement over the present set-up. In a magical world, it would be possible. Since the world is not magical, it isn't.

But there's a much less magical improvement that is possible: expand the playoffs to 8 teams, to include the five P-5 conference champs plus three at-larges.

In fact, if Notre Dame and Clemson win out, and Alabama loses a close game to Georgia in Atlanta, then three of the P-5 champs could end up being left out.

If that happens, guaranteed, the Powers That Be will change the system and soon.

As it is, if Notre Dame by itself wins out, it's pretty much certain that two of the P-5 champs will be excluded. And one of them could be, and probably would be, the B1G champ.

Then, Big Jim Delany will see the light and insist on a change...

I think 16 is the minimum that works. We could possibly get away with 12 but 8 doesn't actually solve the problems. Hell, we might need 24 to solve the problem. 24 teams would be 18.5% of FBS which is still less than that 19.4% of DI basketball that qualify. 19.2% qualify in FCS. The number is just ridiculously low in FBS. It's a farce.

8 works, so does 16....in either case I would love the first round game top being at the higher ranked team home field
