For my 3,000th post, I go back to a question I asked this board several years ago.....

Your son is a stud football player with a solid work ethic and very good grades. He is being approached by all the big guns during the recruiting process, and your son has his choice to go anywhere in the country to play his college football. Want to throw in star ratings? He is a high 4 star.

How are you going to work through all the offers and the (and I'll say it) brown stuff on a white turkey that is being said? Where would you take your 5 official visits? Would you take unofficial visit(s) to ensure you have seen all the leaders in the recruiting race?
You are a Penn State fan, but not categorized as a fanatic.

The question now, with 28 days remaining is....after weighing all the data and information, where are you hoping he attends?

FWIW, I don't recall the year I posed this question before, but I do know, Penn State was struggling and even on this board, was not the overwhelming choice. I could have been in the 2000-2004 span.
And, if my 6' 3" 220# (at the start of the season, but now closer to 210#) son had any kind of speed and fell in to the category; no doubt I would want him attending Pennsylvania State University. However, I would consider my son and I fanatics!

Let the discussions begin.

It would probably come down to factors that can't be answered in a theoretical situation...which coaching staff does he get along with, what players does he connect with, what campus does he like, what does he want to study and how is that program at their school, etc. Really, just where does he want to go and feel most comfortable.

If he's good enough to go PRO, then he could play football at Harvard, North Dakota State or Stanford.

Go where he'd get the most BANG for his buck while having a solid college experience.

If he's going to be a sure fire pro I'd say Stanford, Penn State, Texas, Northwestern, or Michigan. If it was about using a football scholarship to get the best education he could get given that the pros may not be an option, I'd go Ivy League.

I would let him choose but would try to give him guidance along the way. Would not want him to go to a football factory that didn't emphasize academics

This was your 3,001st post. Just sayin'.;)

Or does the counter update even on old posts? Maybe it does. Never really paid much attention to it.

I would visit the following schools for officals:

1. Stanford
2. UVA
3. USC
4. Georgia
5. Washington

In the current environment.

Penn State would be an unofficial. Mainly because there would be plenty of opportunity to visit for free.

Of course it his his decision to make. I would recommend that he take his officals as early as he can. Now he would be able to take
them in the Spring. Then narrow it down to his top three. If he is not sure which school to pick he should pick the school that he feels would honor his SHIP, if he were to get hurt as a Senior in high school. Some schools will and some won't. Most don't think about that. They should. Then after his high scholl career is over he should decide if he still likes that school he has a SHIP from, or should he consider flipping to another school. Alls fair in love and football.

I'd substitute Cal for USC.

1. Penn State
2. Stanford
3. Notre Dame
4. Texas
5. USC

Would also take "unofficial" visits to Northwestern, UVA, Michigan, Georgia and Alabama.

Leave Penn State out of it since I am a fan (my son visited Penn State 5x/year from age 8 to 17. Even has a jacket signed by Jerry Sandusky).

1. Stanford
2. Berkley
3. USC
4. UVA
5. Northwestern
Emphasis has to be on the academic reputation.
As some of you have said, if he is not pro material, then mix some ivies but Stanford stays at the top.

Me: What do you want to be when your football career is over?
Junior: An announcer for ESPN.
Me. You're out of the will.
Junior: Just kidding, Dad.

We'd look at the schools that would provide the best preparation to meet his post-football career goals. For example, if Junior wanted to be an engineer, I'd encourage him to look closely at Penn State, Purdue, Georgia Tech, Stanford, Virginia Tech...

We'd look at the campus environment. Again for example, if city life doesn't appeal to him, we'd strike GT off the list. If being close to home is important, hook 'em.

The coaching staff would, of course, be a very important consideration. Does the staff have a track record of supporting their athletes academically? What do recent players say about the coaches? Does the staff have a track record of developing talent? Have there been an unusual number of transfers out? What are the odds that the HC still being there in a couple years? How does the coach treat players with career-ending injuries?

Lucky me! Since I've lived in WA for 20 years, from that perspective if my son was currently in that situation and asked for my input, I'd suggest the following officials:

1. Penn State
2. Stanford
3. Notre Dame
4. Northwestern
5. UCLA

Unofficial:
1. Boston College
2. USC
Wherever....

Ivy League doesn't give athletic scholarships.

Ivy League doesn't give athletic scholarships.

You are correct, technically. They offer “grant in aid” or something similar. My nephew was offered this to Penn as a quarterback (or as I like to say- Philly campus of Penn State.. drives’em nuts). His tally would’ve been about $3000 per year had he took it. Not bad for a top notch education. Until recently, the Patriot league was the same, as he did accept one there to Laffayette.
