From the interview:

Former Bulldogs’ backup Justin Fields had been talking with the Buckeyes about transferring into Columbus, leading Mathis to consider other options.

“I called before I went in to sign, I had papers from both schools in front of me,” Mathis said. “… I asked if they were talking to Justin Fields, and I got a ‘No’ ”

Mathis, however, said all signs on social media suggested otherwise, and he originally been enticed to come to Georgia during a visit in July of 2017.

Justin Fields was not the issue. The issue was that he wanted to enroll early at OSU but was not academically qualified. Apparently Georgia had easier academic standards(surprise surprise) and allowed him to enroll early.

Mathis took four online courses last Fall to be eligible to enroll early at UGA. Sounds like a big courseload for a HS senior.....

Do you actually believe that recruiters don't stretch the truth (a lot) when going after these kids?

How do you read that? His grades were fine. He was set to enroll early at OSU, too.

Didn't Ohio State recently do this with a RB who was going to go to Michigan? I think they told him his position coach was staying and then the guy bolted the day after LOI day or something like that.

No, Fields is Not the issue. LYING IS THE ISSUE. AGAIN.

Urby is not the coach. Is there anyone in Cbus who can tell the truth?
They'll blame this on Urby....everyone who leaves is always the one to blame.

LOL! OSU would bend their “standards” to get him enrolled if they really wanted him. They would have found a way. You really fell for that reason? Because if you did, boy do I have a couple of real estate deals for including a bridge in the NYC area and some wonderful undeveloped land in FL.

So Urbie can't recruit> If he meets and talks with ANY high school football player that is a recruiting violation....?

Depends on the circumstances. Urban can't initiate phone calls or visit a prospect off campus. He can receive phone calls and meet with prospects on campus.

Delco... you must old like me (59 years old). When we went to college courses were hard and we had to earn grades. Now a days these kids go and expect all A's. I talk to them and it's laughable at the courses and how easy the grading system has become. Just my thoughts :)

So what am I missing? He asked if they were talking to Fields and they said no, but he signed with UGa anyway? Did he sign later or just not believe tOSU?

It was with Weber, the guy who just declared for the draft. And he was very unhappy at the time, nothing that couldn't be "smoothed over," apparently. Now I am sure he is blessed and an Acorn for life. We always think this stuff will matter with the next recruiting class, but it doesn't. I don't know if it is because no one pays attention or just doesn't care. Like with Michigan signing 104 recruits over the last 4 years, and 27 and counting for this year. Will it matter for the upcoming classes that >25% of the kids leave (processed or whatever)? Not if they win.

That's the difference here. Franklin tells every kid how it is, no sugar coating. There's a reason why everyone says it and Ohio State has the reputation it does.

But as many say, it's a business and Ohio State treat it that way. CJF treats the kids as family.

I love CJF....but do we really "know" this? What about CJF's staff? My personal opinion is that we are better at it than the tOSU's and UM's of the world. I am not sure we are better than the Wiscy's or NW's of the world.

I mean, I saw many interviews on early NSD and he said it on camera, I've seen parents say the same. I go based off of that. Although it could not always be the case.

Agree...but if you follow UM and tOSU, they all have their families and proponents as well. I don't know of any kids that claim to be lied to like this kid or the RB, Weber. This is a reason why I pushed back on using the word "family". It is a competitive busienss. I am sure there are kids that didn't feel they were treated or evaluated fairly at PSU. But if you get three people in a room, someone will always feel that way. So, bottom line, you can pick and choose who you listen to and create an echo chamber. I know there are a lot on the media that refer to CJF as a used car salesmen. That comes from someplace. But, again, I love the guy and can't think of a better guy to run the program right now.

We are a close family built on relationships and honesty. Thus, we are best at it.

My daughter took some online PSU courses. They were not a cakewalk or easy credits. I'm curious as to where a high school senior can sign up and take four online classes, and still have time to play football and go to high school each day. That cant be an easy task.

I think he was an OSU commit and he asked OSU if they were speaking with Fields, and they said no. He got a bad vibe and flipped to UGA on signing day. At least that is what is being suggested.

your average college student is not the same as a college athlete and it's not even close. It is not even 10% of the same thing. A football player at OSU is handed a degree as long as they follow the code of conduct, attend classes, and don't get kicked off the team. They have full time tutors who do their homework if they want them to (I know this because my English partner was on the football team and I didn't write a report or assignment in 4 classes, got As in all of them). It doesn't matter if you play a down in a game, you graduate with a degree of choice, debt free, and in a prime position to land a quality job through Real Life Wednesdays and the fact that OSU football player carries weight in central Ohio. I was at Osu from 2010-2012.

Please take this opportunity to remember that Penn State has a culture problem.
