Former lion Halladay has a special son...

...Greg was one of the most over achievers in PennState wrestling history...
...just dirt tough...
...had a losing season as a freshman...
...was an AA as a junior and senior...
...lost 1-4 in the finals his senior year to Clarion's Kurt Angle...

...after graduation he stayed on as an assistant ...Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro was also an assistant at that time...at the last moment I decided to try to get to the NCAAs in Oklahoma City ... Coach Lorenzo was kind enough to offer me a ride with several of his coaches who were coming down the day before the start of the tournament ... I met them at the Bedford exit of the turnpike ... Greg was driving, and he drove non-stop (almost 1,100 miles) to Oklahoma City ( except for an occasional Shakespeare stop - to pee or not to pee) along the way... and we arrived just in time for the opening matches on Thursday ...

Hahaha, not sure if anyone here has listened to the pod but my co-host Garrett has been telling anyone who will listen about the wonderboy Gaige Garcia

Wow, that's a long time in the car with him...;)

... I offered to drive when we reached Missouri but Greg said, "I'm fine , when I drive tractor at home I get on Friday night and get off Sunday afternoon!"

Cael's second year Penn State traveled to Bloomsburg for a match. Greg sat right behind me. It was fun to talk wrestling and all the what ifs that Penn State may experience in the coming years with Cael at the helm.
Have to admit, the expectations we had at the time which were high - we underestimated.

Is there something in the water in Catawissa, PA?

They turn out some really good FB and Wrestling talent.

Yes they do. Garcia transferred in however. There are 3 Garcias actually.

Former lion Halladay has a special son...Oh and then there is this Garcia kid....

Gaige Garcia is ranked #31 by Flo in the class of 2020. Cal Haladay is not in their top 50. As the rankings are based on Jr. High/Middle School competition, as well as offseason tournaments, there's likely to be a lot of movement over the next few years in these rankings.

PA Power Wrestling just put out its Top Freshmen list. I can't open it while on vacation, but maybe someone could see where these guys rank and project to finish this offseason.

Garcia is Mt. Carmel talent - not Southern

True but the kids transferred from shamokin. Was told by the old man "boys can win wrestling championships anywhere, but at southern they can win both".

Time will tell but the odds favor his thought process.

They do but alson
It's been a while since I've lived in PA; is Mt. Carmel still a power?

No
Still +.500 team and usually makes playoffs and still #1 in wins in PA and 4th in country but not a power
Demographics just not in our favor and yes some of best kids end up at southern

Last stage championship was 2002

He transferred to Shamokin FROM Mt Carmel !

Dad was wrestling coach there and got dumped for all the wrong reasons so they went to Shamokin
Figured out that was a dead end and went to southern.

In reality should still be at MC but I won't get Into those details

Just so everyone knows all three of these school districts touch each other and are literally 10 minutes from each other

Cal placed 7th at JH PJWs last year. He also has a brother (I think?) that is also going into 9th (not sure if he is a holdback) - Cam. They are among 6 freshman coming into the SoCo lineup this year that have won PJW JR High medals. Besides the 2 Haladays, there is Garcia, Preston Zachman (PJW runnerup, OTOC Champ), Cade Linn and Max Tillet.

Garcia is the most heralded, rightly so, and I think he could challenge for the top of the podium right off the bat. All of these guys project between 152 and 182 along with a couple of good returnees in Gembiec and Schiccitiano, so I'm not sure that all are going to be able to see the lineup this year. Maybe one can get down to 145 and Lane goes 138 - that could open up another spot.

This team is going to be pretty good over the next few years.

Garcia broke his ankle during the state semi on Friday. He'll have surgery this week. His football season is over, and his wrestling season will get a very late start (if it happens at all this year).

Hopefully he'll get back for wrestling. Many times, a non-compound break heals faster than a sprain.

FYI:

Both Garcia & Haladay were named to the AA PA Football Writeres All-State team. Two of only three Freshmen on thet eam. The third is their teammate, Julian Fleming.

Safe to assume Schiccatano is related to former Southern Columbia football player Nate Schiccatano, who played at ND?

No
That was a Shamokin Thick
His Dad was the Shamokin FB coach on a few occasions (also now county commissioner)

This Shick is Tony's kid - a Mt Carmel LB from the late 70s
Tony's brother Sam walked on at PSU in 81 and made the team until he got in a fight with Curt Warner

His girlfriend, now wife, was a PSU cheerleader at the time

Now that's an interesting contrast. He was smart enough to date a PSU cheerleader (and not let her get away), and _______ enough to get in a fight with one of the all-time great FB players at PSU.

Wouldn't have believed it if not for the fact that you have a good track record, colt. Thanks for sharing the info.

So, Schiccatano is a common name in those parts? ;)

Schiccatano is to Northumberland/Columbia County area as?
Stolzfus is to Lancaster County

Yea it kind of is.....but there are different spellings and they are not all related

The funniest part is hearing opposing announcers trying to pronounce it's!

I know this family very very well - big family and dad was THE COP in town back in the day
And I don't mean he was the only cop if you know what I mean

I played with both Sam (who was a couple years older ) and Mike who was in my grade
I worked as a lifeguard with the cheerleader and she is now a teacher
Our kids played on some little league teams together so we've crossed paths

I'm not sure you e captured it exactly dead on but he was/is certainly crazy _ _ _
