If you want to get the young PSU linebackers and the new secondary a good test without a significant risk of losing a game, you couldn't draw up a much better matchup than this one.

A tailback who runs a 4.3 with good size, and a very smart well-organized running game, good receivers (mostly the transfers), and a mobile quarterback.

Nothing teaches a young LB about alignments and angles more than seeing the rear end of a fast running back as he goes by you.

If the young LBers end up stuck in the wrong gap or overpursue their way out of position, this back is going to be in a footrace with the PSU safeties. If the safeties get caught too low, he will score. If the ends don't keep contain, the QB will run underneath and hurt them.

If this team can get decent OL play they could be just successful enough to serve up some really good teachable moments for the D. Meaning they might score some points.

+1. Thought the same thing.
couple of points though, for all intents and purposes a newbie QB at Beaver Stadium and not a noon game.
Add in a converted DL to OL and TE to OL and well we are all to familiar with how that works out for the first year or so. Could be a big afternoon for our DE's.
The other thing is they have some very good CB's that should test our young WR's.

They will have to find a way to run the ball because they will not have any fun pass protecting. Their offense is about misdirection and quick hit type running and they execute it well. On the other hand Pry knows this and might bring the safeties down.

This App State game scares me. Don't know if it's because all of the unknowns given the players we lost and youth every where or if its just first game jitters or their reputation. I was listening to Matt Stinchcomb, former Georgia Bulldog and NFL player being interviewed today about the Georgia and Coastal Carolina game on Saturday. He made a comment about App State that caught my attention. He told the interviewer "not to make more of Coastal Carolina than necessary. They are who they are, and it's not like they are App State which is 2 to 3 times better." In interviews last year I remember the respect the Georgia coaches showed them and their angst about playing them. My take? I don't care what the score is. Play hard, show what we can become, win the game, and get out healthy.

Actually the TE to OL began his playing days as an OL and switched temporarily to TE and is now back on the OL.

i think it is a great home opener. i think playing a low level MAC team (or FCS) doesn't really do much for improving and is boring as a fan. Playing a decent mid-major provides typically at least a decent 1st half that has some excitement and provides the players on the field some challenge. Gain a lot of good game tape for players and coaches to review and work on. And hopefully PSU scores mid 3rd quarter to go up by 24 points and JFF can start working in the 2nd and 3rd string to get some real reps.

I have said it before, The team got to be ready. Most agree but there are those who don't understand.
