Franklin is here to stay!

Mother F’er how anyone can parlay an 11-9 record over two seasons into an 80 million dollar extension is just freaking beyond me. If he stayed he stayed but that massive extension is just stupid. PSU deserves what it gets…which will be 8-4 seasons.

Barron & Barbour

Two years from now, they will both be gone, and it will be someone else' problem.

He sold them on the fact that we will make the playoff routinely once it goes to 12 so just wait. We don't have to beat O$U in the reg season. They conveniently forgot about the other 1-3 blown games that will happen every season. Hello Citrus, Outback and Music City bowls for the forseeable future!

2020 Covid, 2021 unlucky injuries. None of it is James's fault or responsibility. That is my story and I am sticking to it. Now get to work on the 2022 excuse.

Just mentioned this to a few colleagues at work. One an OSU guy, the other an SEC fan. The reaction from both: great news for OSU.

No doubt Franklin has elevated the program. He's a good man and a good coach. But if last year raised a lot of questions about the program and our ability to challenge OSU, this year answered a great many of them, IMO. 2016-17 was our peak, and it's going to be tough -- but not impossible -- to get back to that. Much less getting to that CFP level.

No guarantee we'd get a replacement better than Franklin anyway, so this might be for the best.

So we just ignore the 4 prior seasons?

How has he elevated the program? 2013 Obrien 7-5, 2021 Franklin 7-5

He got us through sanctions and back into national relevance. There's really no disputing that. Whatever else he does -- or doesn't do -- here, that will be a huge part of his legacy.

But the question is......has he peaked?

He can't win big games. He recruits well -- but not nearly on par with OSU. We have recurring problems in crucial areas -- most notably the O-line. And we seemingly lose random games to inferior talent each year. I don't see that changing.

Franklin will have us a respectable 9-3 on average. We won't win the marquee games, but we'll win most of the games we should.

If that's good enough for the administration/fans, so be it. That's not my call.

We need to stop using OSU as a benchmark. They have no peers in the Big 10 and only 2-3 peers nationally. If that's your benchmark you're firing your coaches every season.

I never said we fire our coaches for not making that benchmark.

In fact, I never said we fire Franklin. Period.

I do question the wisdom of a monster extension given the trajectory of this program. If he leaves for USC, I wouldn't see that as the worst thing in the world. That's very different than firing him, though.

And we don't need to match OSU. But we better start getting close talent-wise, because we're sure as hell not going to outmaneuver Ryan Day with inferior talent. We have some good pieces coming in, but need a lot more.

Your OSU colleague is a bit misguided considering Franklin's PSU teams have tested the Buckeyes better than anyone else in the conference.
Exactly. Know some very down to earth Buckeyes and they will honestly say, they care about beating Michigan the most, but the B1G game that worries them the most each season is playing us.

And yet we haven't played them within one possession since 2018. OSU standards are such that merely winning by ~10 is unnerving.

I suspect that trend will continue. They'll be a solid ~10 points ahead. Some years more, some years less. The only thing that really matters is the W-L record, and it's now been 5 years. I don't see that changing soon.......not with the way Day is recruiting on both sides of the ball. His system is a tougher matchup for us than Meyer's system.

The thing with Franklin is, he seems to have his time super-pumped for playing OSU -- just like OSU has their team prepped for Michigan. And then, the random losses to crap teams. Playing OSU respectable is little consolation when you can't beat Illinois or close out games vs. Iowa or Michigan.

That's the issue. We'll play OSU respectable, but we're no threat to supplant them atop the conference.

This extension is absolutely outrageous .

Rewarding mediocrity on steroids.

Sadly even if we beat them in those two 1 pt loses, the gap would be smaller, but we were still not going to supplant them.

Congratulations Coach! We Are!!!

By and large that’s what Penn State was with JoePa at the helm. How many times did he lose to OSU and Michigan?

Franklin’s first two years were immediately following the sanctions and last year was last year - look at the train wreck Michigan and Michigan State were last year. This year has been disappointing but had Clifford not been injured we beat Iowa probably by two scores and I doubt there is the let down vs Illinois.

Franklin’s recruiting is once again picking up after two average classes. I just don’t see the doom and gloom that so many see. Franklin has had a lot more success than Harbaugh has had at Michigan, and he didn’t have sanctions to overcome. I think things will pick up again in two years once this latest class has some experience.

I definitely don't see reason for doom and gloom. 9-3 on average is a pretty respectable state for a football program. Just depends on whether people think we should be competing for the CFP or not, or whether people think we're likely to get back to where we were in 2016-17. I'm bearish on both fronts, but as I've said before, absent any better alternatives, this is what we have.

If getting tested means winning virtually every year, put me in for some good 'ole fashioned testing then!!

Yep, I hear the same from my Buckeye friends. Even this year when we had lost momentum going into that game they were still nervous, knowing that Franklin always has the team ready to compete against them.

Agreed. The problem is he loses 3 OTHER games or more each year and annually craps the bed after bye weeks and as big favorites, see Illinois
