Last year most non-Penn State fans thought Gable Steveson would be a freshman national champ.

I don't think many would have given Mekhi Lewis a shot, not with Joseph and Marinelli at that weight.

My question is - what Freshman has the best shot and winning a National Championship this year?

Real Wood?
Sammy Sasso?
David Carr?
Travis Wittlake?
Trent Hidlay?
Aaron Brooks?
Abe Asaad?
Tony Cassioppi?

I'm sure I'm missing some off the top of my head, but who would be the Freshman that could do what Mekhi did last year?

I second Brayton Lee. He seems to have Sasso's number.
Also, I'd lay a hundo on Brooks at 8:1 odds. He's dynamic enough to pull a Mekhi shocker. One 6 point move and it's play defense time.

Sasso and Lee are the 2 best bets -- among the best freshmen and at the weakest weight.

Any list also needs to include Shane Griffith.

Maybe Alirez, Kendall Coleman and Wittlake get some consideration. Alirez hasn't been wrestling well and Coleman got hammered by Deakin and Hidley, but there's no Zahid standing in the way, for example. Witlake has one 4-1 loss to Griffith this year. He does have proven studs to get through though

Sasso and Brooks I think have a shot. Long shot but not that long

Sasso needs to find more lungs to finish matches before he’s a legit title threat. If he can get to the semis he’ll be dangerous being able to recoup after the last weigh in.

Freshmen champs, by year, since and including 2010 (reverse order);

NOTE: It's commonly thought that upper weight freshmen win individual championships far less than the lighter weights, reasons can be debated. The data below shows three champs at 125, one at 133, and two at 141, while J'Den Cox (197) is the only freshman champ above 174 pounds.

2019
Mekhi Lewis (165)

2018
Spencer Lee (125)
Yianni Diakomihalis (141)

2017
Vincenzo Joseph (165)
Mark Hall (174)

2016
Myles Martin (174)

2015
Nathan Tomasello (125)
Isaiah Martinez (157)

2014
Jason Tsirtsis (149)
J'Den Cox (197)

2013
NONE

2012
Logan Stieber (133)

2011

2010

149 is the best chance of this happening so Lee or Sasso IMO as well

in fact, 149 might be the “weakest” Weight top to bottom in college wrestling in a very long time
