FRL 153: How does Penn State do it?

This had already been linked in the Wittlake and RBY verbal thread.

It was appropriate in that thread. However, it probably warrants its own thread.

In that context, I'll repeat what I posted as a reply to the link in the aforementioned thread:

FRL 153 is a good show. Appears they (Willie and Vais/CP) had some hints that RBY was trending to PSU for some time, though that had not gotten into the public sphere.

Apparently, they have had to cancel their planned Signing Day Show, due to the NCAA not being able to give a definitive ruling on whether Flo flying the guys in to announce their decisions was legal or not. They still plan to have live announcements for Fix, Berge, and Warner that week.

I wonder if jammenz realizes what effect he has on the perception of the Minnesota program and JRob. I bet many PSU fans here and fans of other schools whose message boards he trolls used to respect Minny and JRob and now despise them. I don't count myself among them but it is pretty hard to keep from doing that based on his continuous hatred of all things PSU. Of course, maybe that is what he wants, for Minny and JRob to be hated and despised.

You give him far too much credit.

Maybe he secretly wants Gable to come to PSU

Quick thinking and an excellent job by Willie, throwing cold water on our PSU Wrestling slush fund.;)
Yes, what Wille said was very reasonable. I would have enjoyed it more telling Iowa/OSU/tOSU that we have a slush fund, we hid it where you can't find it and boo hoo, deal with it.

1 person could never make me perceive an entire program a certain way. Besides some of the stuff he posts makes me laugh anyway

It didn't take long reading these boards to realize than jammenz just likes to stir up s**t just to be stirring, and disconnect him from Minny (or Nebby depending on the day.) I think all fan bases have one or two of those guys...that is why they have "ignore" buttons!

It's more likely than not that jammenz has never had any personal contact with either JRob or anyone else connected to the program. That's why most of his posts are nothing but innuendos.

Unlike jammenz, I've had the privilege of meeting JRob in person. He and a friend of mine were teammates in college. JRob is a good guy and he has done a lot of good things to promote wrestling. The events over the summer were unfortunate, but they have not changed my opinion of either JRob or the Minnesota program.

Umm, okay, but what I really meant was, regardless of his content, I don't think Jammen is capable of influencing anyone toward dislike of the Minnesota team or even its fan base.

I won't say he's way out there on an island, but his best friend is a volleyball. And everybody who pays attention for 15 seconds gets that.

And yet many feel a need to respond. What's the definition of insanity again?

So Wilson is his new nickname?

Did I!? It wasn't intentional, but am always elated to do so![/QUOTE]

You didnt point out JammenX by name, and I dont think he would even enter your mind during that conversation. His trolling is good but NOT that good.

To my point and why I lumped your convo with what JammeX brings to the boards is JammeX's assertion that something nefarious is going on at PSU and that we need investigated because we are doing it better than anyone else. Your conversation said what I and others have posted countless times over the past years here on BWI.....PSU athletes and their families ARE making the decision to come PSU for reasons other than the best financial offer out there. As you recounted a story of a national champ with student loan debt and asking why wasnt he on full ride.

PSU can land these big recruits for less than full rides because their goals are more than money. Its nobodys business but the staff and the wrestlers, but people would be shocked if they knew what some of these families were willing to sacrifice to be a part of this program.

Good point, but are you sure CP wasn't elated to keep PSU on Fix's list? Willie would get another commission check from the NLWC slush fund, right?

This. It's good to be the king ... and Cael is king. The high recruits Cael is bringing here mostly aren't coming to PSU to get a free ride to college ... they are coming here to prepare to win Olympic Gold. Parents who have the means are looking for a program that will give their son the best opportunity to achieve their ultimate goals while getting an excellent education in the process. If Cael is able to sell this vision, it should not be surprising to anyone that some kids will come to PSU for less $$$$ than they could get elsewhere. It's not always about the money ...

A very understated and little noticed thing in our favor is the openness the NLWC and Cael and crew have towards other (read "foreign") ideas. Let's face it - the US isn't the acknowledged leader in wrestling technique and tradition. Bringing in Yonemitsu was a master stroke. Wasn't the guy a judoka until about age 15 or so when he starts to wrestle? Starts winning world medals a few years later. Then didn't they have an Eastern European as a visiting technician as well? If I have dreams of international success I don't care if the guy training me is a Martian. Having guys in the room from different backgrounds is only going to enhance our guys' skills.

Now I don't want to go all TR Foley here, but there is a segment of the wrestling community that is extremely Nativist - for example, there was some outrage on TheMat about the NLWC training a foreign athlete (I.e. Gomez) - despite no Team USA funds going to him. If other training sites want to take the "they took ar jerbs!!!" approach, that's fine with me. I want the NLWC leadership to continue to think outside the box. Hell, if they can get them in on Visas, bring in an Azeri,Iranian, Russian etc so our guys can learn from the very best.

You think it's a coincidence that Zain and Frank improved by leaps and bounds?

Jaime Espinal had been at the NLWC for a while as well, he ended up doing quite well for himself (speaking of interesting progressions)

To quote Joe Esposito, Cael is the best around, and nothing's gonna ever keep him down.

Would like to offer an addition...

Parents and recruits may also see Cael and his staff as important roll models.

There is still a demand for helping young men become stronger, more capable and more accomplished on and off of the mat.

Adding solid grounding for a lifetime, after the collegiate wrestling eligibility is over.

Becoming good citizens, good family men, performing well and giving back to help others.

Cael brings focus, intensity and a clear-headed calm amid the storms, that are rare and desirable combinations.

Programs that have great coaches, who are also great roll models are places where elite athletes like to hitch their stars.
