He did a hell of a job at UCLA too

Hired on Jan. 29, 2020, Lydell Sargeant began his first year with the Morgan State athletic department as the Associate Athletic Director for Development and Revenue Generation. In June 2021, Sargeant was promoted to Senior Associate Athletic Director- External Relations and Development.

“We are excited to welcome Lydell to the Morgan family,” said Director of Athletics, Scott. “His experience as a student-athlete, coupled with his time in the National Football League and fundraising experience at various collegiate institutions will be a tremendous asset for our athletic department.”

Sargeant comes to Morgan State after spending nearly three years (2017-2020) at UCLA as an Assistant AD for Development. At UCLA, Sargeant was instrumental in the largest athletic capital campaign in school history that raised $350M as part of a University-Wide $5 Billion Centennial Campaign. A top fundraiser at UCLA, Sargeant was pivotal in athletic fundraising efforts and the Wooden Athletic Fund’s over $150M in Athletic Capital Projects.

Before heading to UCLA, Sargeant worked at Marquette University as the Director of Development responsible for major gifts and the Director of Athletic Development at Utah Valley University. While at Marquette and Utah Valley, Sargeant managed all facets of the Blue & Gold Fund and Wolverine Club, athletics annual funds. Sargeant started his college athletic administration career as Assistant AD of Football Administration at his alma mater, Penn State. A former U.S. Presidential Campaign Staffer, Sargeant worked directly with both President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama in the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections.

A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Sargeant received his bachelor’s degree from Penn State in 2009, where he played defensive back for legendary coach Joe Paterno and the Nittany Lions from 2005-08. As a four-year letterman and All-Big Ten selection, Sargeant was an influential member on Penn State’s 2005 Orange Bowl and 2008 Rose Bowl teams. Sargeant went on to play in the National Football League for the Buffalo Bills until suffering a career-ending knee injury in 2010.

Following his NFL career, Sargeant obtained his master’s degree in sport management studies from California University of Pennsylvania in 2013. A graduate of both the NACDA Charles Whitcomb Leadership Institute and Learfield Minority Academy, Sargeant currently serves on the development board for MOAA and is the President of the Penn State Football Lettermen’s Club, largest football alumni organization in the country. He is joined at Morgan by his wife Nicole and two kids, Isabella and Niko.

“I am excited to bring all the great alumni and supporters of Morgan State University and Morgan State athletics together as we continue to build a sustainable championship model that will impact generation upon generations to come,” said Sargeant.
