With NIL what do you think the future of college football will be? With no salary cap will the teams with the most money win every year?

Ultimately I think the same historical disparities of resources will exist overall. We know certain schools have always paid players through hidden conduits. NIL does not guarantee success. BC just beat $12M NIL funded FSU.

Has that not been the case forever? Am I missing something?
So it was all money, not coaching?

It was always the haves vs the have nots...including us going back to 1982. 1990 is the only possible exception.

Nothing has changed in terms of the winning teams likely coming from a predictable pool of Georgia Bama Texas Oklahoma USC Oregon Penn State Ohio State Michigan LSU Tennessee and ND. Maybe one of the Florida schools or A&M figure things out.

Looks like more geographic to me. Wow, had not stopped to consider how infrequently a team not from the South has won it all.

How do you know that FSU has $12 million NIL? Is there an updated report?

I think the gap between the haves and have nots is going to increase. Teams like Purdue, Illinois, etc would get a top player and be able to knock off the top teams. I think Paterno was able to recruit by appealing to parents about the value of education. I think a lot of that stuff is gone because now it's all about money.

I think a lot of teams will adopt Wisconsin's approach. Build your team around OL and DL because they don't cost as much. Then maybe get some 3* skill players that outperform their rankings.

Without any history or tradition of being good it is hard to drum up money from donors. Hey donate to Indiana football and we can go from 3-9 to possibly 5-6. Who cares. The haves will continue to dominate and stretch out their advantage from the have nots.

On a related note, check out the article posted today on ESPN.com about SMU and their resurgence in football based on big oil money boosters donating. It was huge for them to get into the ACC. There is a quote from one of these oil billionaires that said they didn't care about not getting any TV revenue dollars from the ACC for whatever length of time it is, like 8 years. The guy said it is only a couple hundred million that they easily can cover. They will pay anything for a player and they are desperate to get back to the Pony Express days. They may win the ACC this year, who knows.

Look for Oregon (Nike) and Texas (oil) to emerge as perennial powers. While Ohio State is at the top of the heap for now, I don't think that remains. Ohio has no special economic advantage. Teams like Georgia and Alabama will remain at or near the top given the popularity of football in the deep south and their reputations. Otherwise, teams will come and go from the playoffs.

Smells like people dropping numbers to heat the Norvell seat up.

Wisconsin abandoned that approach with the hire of Fickell. They are just as typical as dang near everyone else out there.

This is why I question a lot of the "we better watch out for Wisconsin game" people. They no longer have the huge OL and slew of RBs they are ready to burn the tread off of. They even abandoned their 3-4. Development for them is gone. They are out just buying guys, filling holes.

We agree on some disagree on some. Paterno still got guys because they believed he could get them to the next level. It wasn't ever just about an education--at least not for probably 50 years. I also think the Purdue of the world will randomly still get an elite kid--now whether or not they stay of 3-5 years might be a different story.

For about 80-90 % of the teams listed in your nifty little chart the answer is an Emphatic YES!

It won't be that linear.

But the haves and have nots will become more pronounced...and the champion will come from a group of rich schools while the schools at the bottom may get occasional "transcendant" seasons...only to see the roster get gutted by the draft or the transfer portal the next year. But those transcendant seasons will likely be featured by playoff runs...for a Purdue or Minnesota, and not an actual national title. Only a roster as deep as a blue blood program can run the gauntlet of the regular season and a 3 (or 4) game playoff.

Will PSU be able to compete? Yes.
1. Especially if we can have a deep playoff run in the next few years. The fan base will suddenly get very inspired to donate if we win the Big Ten and/or win 2 or 3 playoff games. A 9-3 PSU that narrowly misses the playoff this year and/or next will slip behind the elite schools even more.
2. Team culture still matters too. And Franklin does that well. It has to accompany results...but as we heard in the Singleton quote about PSU not paying players like the other big boys, not all players care ONLY about the money. Like jobs in the real world...you might accept less money to be in a great work environment.
