Well my 11 year old daughter played indoor Field Hockey this weekend in Downingtown, PA. they finished 2-1-1 for 2nd place at the U-14 division. She gave up 3 goals in four games. I thought she played well, but I don't know stuff about this sport. She had 24 saves by my count so, I think that is a good save percentage.

The amount of talented girls in our area is amazing. There were teams from Maine to Virginia in this tourney. The girls are so focused and tough. I am always wearing Blue and White to hopefully get girls to PSU.

You appear to have a very special relationship with your daughter. It is heartwarming. All the best to you both.

No way, histone. I was outside the indoor complex at USTC, at one of the soccer fields. I figured there was a big tournament going on inside, as parking was rather difficult for only 2 soccer games. Later, I saw a bunch of girls carrying field hockey sticks, so I figured that's what the tournament must be.

Had I known your daughter and you were there, I would have stopped inside to chat.

Congrats on your daughters success.

The most perplexing thing about field hockey is .......why do they use such a large goal (especially height) when it's so darned difficult to elevate the ball? Those sticks arent conducive to getting "lift"

You'd be surprised at what they can do with their sticks. I shot a game or two for PSU on the road....

Lifting the ball is not a problem for D1 players.

Wade, you and your wife must enjoy every moment in your daughter’s life. May those achievements be in athletics or academics, the span of time from now to the day she graduates will hurriedly pass, but the memories of those moments of past times will be etched in your minds forever.

The past eight years with our grandchildren have become a dream come true for Karen and myself. Baseball, football, basketball, softball, volleyball, field hockey, soccer, Honor Society inductees for all, graduate school for the two boys, entering college for two girls and maybe the youngest, Sophie, will transfer her residence from Alabama to live with us and enter The Pennsylvania University.

Mt wife and I were talking the other night and enjoying some of our memories with the grandkids and a favorite poped into our conversation. My grandson, Jobie, was playing a starting guard on the Lake Lehman football team and during the game he took himself out of the lineup. He told the coach that “he wasn’t having a good game and to replace him with the backup.” The coach screamed at him and told him to “get his a$$ back on the field or I’ll show you on Monday what a bad day feels like.”

The speed of the game must be greater on a hard surface versus outdoor on grass.

Correct, our grand daughter's HS team often practices on indoor hardwoods. All state playoff's are played on fast, artificial turf. The game is very fast in college compared to high school. My granddaughter was recruited by St. Frances (D1 field hockey). She started to have second thoughts about furthering her hockey. I believe she is getting tired of the hockey struggle and just wants to attend Penn State. I told her, you signed on to St. Frances and should honor your commitment. If she finds out that college field hockey is not in the mix after her first year, then she could transfer to PSU and concentrate on her academics and enjoy the college years.

Darn, I was thinking about telling you we would be down there. We were there from 7:00 am to about 1:30 pm. The soccer fields are very nice, I watched some of the soccer being played, the crowd was into the action. I think the remainder of my kids games will be played at The Spooky Nook.

Look at my avatar. 14 year old girls have no problem getting lift on the ball.

Great advice Step. Congrats on her being chosen to First Team All-State! She is even a better person than a field hockey player. She was so nice to Faye at L-L camp.

Great photos. That must be fun work!
It was. But it also is a lot harder work than it looks. I would be exhausted when I got home.

I've not done it since late 2011 or perhaps the baseball tourney in 2012 (I do not recall), as volunteering for PSU (and I was a volunteer--though credited and accredited) became a lot tougher to impossible after that date. They just hire local pros now--if they do any photography at all--for away stuff. My last published photo for them, in fact, was actually credited to the pro.

But I can tell you that it was a real thrill--and a big surprise--the first time I had one of my photos used as the daily lead photo on gopsusports.

A lot more fun for the keeper. Outdoor games on grass can become boring for my kid.

To all that replied;
Thank you for humoring me. I am having a blast at this parenting thing. It is her goal to go to PSU for field hockey, but I don't push her and just tell her that I enjoy watching her play. Tonight she gets a Solo act in the x-mas concert playing the Tuba! Triple threat. hahahaha

You would travel to away games to take photos of the teams? On you own dime. Wow

No. I *live* in a "away" location. Columbus. Lots of action here. I was not given the opportunity to shoot football or basketball, of course. Those were already handled by pros. But minor sports? It depended on the ASID. Some liked to use me--and some could not care if they had any photos. This was also back in the day when they did a lot more with their publications--all of the sports had printed media guides and away photos were useful. Nowadays, the media guides are on line and pretty basic.

Basically it started when I got to know Barry Gorman thru our alumni club (I'm a big soccer nut) and would send him photos I took at games--back in the day of film. Then I went digital and got the idea to contact the ASDI for soccer, as PSU used to come out every Labor Day for tOSU's tournament (and they would come to ours the following week). He was *very* interested. That gave me an opening and I got to do some other sports for him as well as some of the others folks. I even got to cover the men's NCAA championships in swimming and men's gymnastics. I had a run of about 5 years. The tOSU staff were also very helpful and friendly--at least 95% of the time. Minor sports love being covered. I would occasionally give the tOSU folks photos, when I got a good one--and had a couple published on line.

Some stuff I could not shoot well of course, as my camera wasn't up to the task--mostly indoor stuff, though I was able to do a decent job with gymnastics. The lenses you need to shoot available light indoors are quite expensive.

It was a fun run while it lasted.

Now I understand kgilbert78, I read your post and thinking you were on the “club” ice hockey or lacrosse team. Very nice photos.
No, it was my younger brother that played ice hockey for PSU back in the day (on the tennis courts!). They were kind enough to let him join Varsity S as a result.

Actually, there's probably about 20 different galleries for at least 5-6 different sports somewhere on PSU's site.....

Ironically, I did get to compete intercollegiately while in school--but not for Penn State but for tOSU when I was a grad student. I was on the "F" team for the 1982 Pan American Chess Championship (OSU ran quite a few teams that year, as the tourney was in Columbus). And my team did play Penn State (I lost, as I recall).

My son roomed with an ice hockey player sometime between 1986 & 1990. He gave me a clue corduroy cap w/ Penn State Hockey emblem across the front wore it every because the hats were scarce. I gave it back to my son a few years ago.
Good night kgilbert, time to go home.

Actually, field hockey is supposed to be played on an artificial surface. Of course, that's cost prohibitive for a lot of high schools, so playing indoors is good for kids who otherwise might not get to play on a "normal" artificial surface very regularly.
