Worley at Indianapolis tonight:

7 innings 1 run on 7 hits, 0 walks [EDIT...Worley went back out for the 8th as well - Indy's bullpen is depleted since a couple of guys are moving up to the Buccos for tomorrow's game - got 2 quick outs, then gave up a solo HR]

84 pitches to get through 7, 70% strikes

He would be "on turn" to slot into Locke's scheduled start against Cincinnati on Labor Day.

I hope Hurdle makes the change, but I have no confidence that he will.

I would take virtually anyone over Locke.

Heck I'd even settle for a different Locke.

Locke pitched pretty decently his last time out. With that in mind, by all means make the switch.;)

Locke is a catastrophe wrapped in a disaster, and Morton is not much better. For the rest of the season, and through the playoffs, any time either pitches, I will assume we lose.

Pretty much a lock that the Buccos make the post-season....but also looking like a good chance they will have to get past the one-and-done play in game.

The biggest post-season obstacle, aside from the dumb one-and-done set up (thank you MLB) is where do they turn to for their 3rd (and possibly 4th) post-season SP - based on whether or not they go with short rest for the playoffs.

Right now you feel:

Very good about Cole

Okay about Franky (who always has good "stuff", but sometimes loses his command)

Who's the third - or fourth - guy?

I'd like to see Worley get a few turns in September.....because he might need to be in the post-season rotation.

- Burnett is a wild card at best
- Locke gives you one good game out of 4, with the rest being knuckle-biters
- Morton is hit and miss...the "stuff" is there - but you can almost count on one horrendous inning per start
- Happ has been very good the last few turns (right now - he'd probably be the 3rd starter - which is kind of scary) but can you ignore what he has done the last few years?

St Louis, the Dodgers, and the Mets are all going to be able to run (at least) 3 legit "ace" type starters out there.
Earlier in the season it looked like the Buccos could match that (Cole, Liriano, Burnett). This was "supposed" to be the year that Taillon made the mid-season step that Cole made in 2013 (4-0 in September, then two great starts against the Cardinals). But right now the Buccos need to find a guy (or two) who can at least give them a fighting shot out of the 3rd/4th spots.

Bucs Bullpen from Twitter was at the game tonight and said Worley was lucky. They hit him hard.

Seriously, if our post season rotation is depending on Worley. We are in trouble. Burnett will be back.

Cole, Liriano, Burnett, Happ is pretty good. They could go with a 4 man rotation.

I agree, it's a problem, but I have a lot of faith in Searage to sort it out. From what I read in the paper today, Burnett will be ready to go very soon and I think he will gut out some big wins, both down the stretch and in the playoffs. I like Happ and, again, giving Searage credit, he's improved a lot since he's been here. I think he will get the job done. We'll see.

I admire your support of Worley. I don't think he could find a better rep. But really, nobody wanted him. Many a team could've had him for pennies. He's ok, but he's not very good. I would rather see him than Locke next time, but I would rather see just about anyone else beside Lock next time he's up in the rotation. Worley probably won't be back with the bucs this year. I don't think Searge and Hurdle have much confidence in him at all. I think they are hoping Burnett is back as 3rd starter, and if not him then it might indeed be Happ, especially if he keeps pitching like he has. In the playoffs (if they get passed the one and done) they need 5-6 innings from the 2 and 3 starters and then they'll hand it to the bullpen.

Maybe the Buccos will go with the Royals pitching plan - on steroids:

Start Bastardo for 2 innings, then Blanton and Caminero for 2 innings each, followed by Soria/Watson/Melancon. Forces teams that platoon any of their position players to use up their bench by the 4th inning.

I am only 1/2 kidding. With their rotation - and the off days for travel in the post-season....it couldn't be any worse than starting Locke or (the way he is pitching lately) Morton.....could it? With the work they are getting from their starters in the 2nd half, ya' gotta' think outside the box a bit.

When Cole or Liriano pitch, so long as they give you 6 innings, you can still run Soria/Watson/Melancon out there for the 7th, 8th, and 9th every game.
