Basketball GAME THREAD: Penn State Hoops versus Maryland

F-Ugly start. 6 turnovers. Missed bunnies by Kebba, Henn, Jalen.

Solid D with 3 blocks. Terms with only 14 points 11 mins into game. We don't even have that making only 2 shots (both threes)

Still in it but really bad start

Keba is a joke. D2 talent.

Maryland big guy Reese goes out w 2 fouls...Len Elmore comments that it could favor Maryland advantage on offense as it will "pull out Dread and open floor." We go on a run 1 point game

Here we go again. Winnable, tight game on the road. Come back to be within 3 even with way too many turnovers.

Do we show mental toughness in a tight game and actually get a W to pivot the season or wilt with turnovers and general sloppy play?

Disastrous series out of a PSU timeout. Weak offensive foul on Dread on a play where they were setting him up for a 3. Maryland goes on a 7 point run sandwiched between missed open 3s by Dread and Jalen. Missed shot in close by Jalen. Down 10.

An optimist would say bad call started it...but the subsequent misses are on us.
Funk getting beat by MD #1 in clutch.

PSU 0-2 from line...MD 13-15

Answered my own own question. Wilt it is. Give up a 9-0 tun from the 6 and change mark to the 2 minute mark to turn a 3pt tight game into a 12 point non tight game.

MD on 9-0 run. We stand around on offense when "quick hitters" were needed. We are competitive...but ultimately do not know how to win

At this point Cam should sit...let Kanye get experience. He stepped up today. No benefit for our future letting 11 on the court.

Find for time for Mahaffey and let Kebba take his lumps. Henn experiment ultimately failed. Maybe more minutes for 23 Johnson too...see if he is worth keeping or portaling.

Get Lilley on the floor. If an above .500 record gets us into NIT anyway we have nothing to lose.

They might not win again.

At this point, the other team is going to have to lose the game rather than PSU winning it for them to win another game. This season has degenerated into a complete embarrassment: still one road win all season and there’s almost no chance that they’ll win another one this season. That just tells you how weak and fragile this team is.

I think there is a decent chance we get one more win because a blind squirrel finds an acorn every once in a while. But yeah we could lose out and would not surprise me at this point.

You are right on your points; 1) We have no earthly clue how to play good solid basketball in crunch, winning time hence we don't know how to win and therefore a team will have to collapse for us to get a W; 2) This season has quickly dissolved into dumpster fire territory.

I remember how excited I was when we made the NIT in the early 90s. I winning season and post season basketball was a new concept.

We even screwed the pooch on that by moving a Lady Lions game to accommodate men's vs Marquette (?) and ESPN.

There was a time under Pat where competing late felt good after being so awful for so long. We finally seemed to turn a corner then the wheels fell completely off the wagon.

All of the potential of this team seems to have fallen off the cliff...but we should also give other teams credit based on exploiting our obvious limitations.

Today Kanye stepped up, but was not without a few bone headed plays which disrupted our momentum and fueled Maryland (fumble at top of arch leading to rushed Funk triple from near m8dcourt and driving too deep and losing possession on bad pass or shot(?) attempt)

Funk is getting fried on D. Teams are running plays to exploit him.

Doubling/tripling Jalen down low has not hurt our opponents. Maryland made some sweet passes underneath for easy buckets today. It appears that maybe we had that as a point of emphasis too....maybe to get Reese in foul trouble..as we tried to get cute inside early which lead to many turnovers.

We have some good players and make good plays in every game. The team is fun (but frustrating) to watch.

But in the end We Are mediocre.

Appreciate all the analysis, but there's no point in getting invested in the BB program until there is compelling evidence that it's worth it. JMO.

This...not sure why anyone is mad by the expected. We weren't supposed to win today.

Not mad....disappointed....game was there to win. We didn't, they did.
Fair enough. I just think people, not necessarily you, are trying to make this team into something it isn't. They're on pat with the women's team in terms of record. Both are abysmal.
