Hypothetical question: As a fan, would you rather your team win a conference title (unlikely this year for Penn State) and lose your first round playoff game OR not win a conference title and win a first round playoff game and making the elite eight? Conference titles are forever.

Financially for a school, does it benefit them to not finish in the top four but rather five through eight and host a first round playoff game? Certainly seems that way and for the school's town/area hotels, restaurants, etc.

When I was working, those that couldn't get their work done were rewarded with overtime which to me was rewarding inefficiency. Seems like finishing ranked five through eight is better financially than finishing in the top four.

As a fan, I'd rather my team be so damn good that they finish undefeated (destroying every opponent during the regular season), decisively win the CCG, then maul all the competition in the playoffs. And of course, win the championship.

That doesn't seem like asking for too much...does it?

Who cares about a conference title. I could give zero shits about a B1G championship 0.

The only thing that matters is the playoffs. Lets win as many as possible.

Strongly disagree Gregg.

Seeds 1 - 4 get a first round pass.
Seeds 5 - 8 get a first round home game
Seeds 9 - 12 get a first round away game.

I know it is obvious, but the higher the seed, the better the chance to get to the finals. A conference title helps greatly.

Losing in the conference championship game could be disastrous in terms of playing an extra game AND getting smoked enough to drop from a home game to an away game.

And some teams could use an extra week to recover depending upon their injury situations, so I don't think there is one correct answer.

Good point.

Cael? Is that you?

JMO, conference titles don't have the same meaning these days. I'd rather come in 3rd and avoid having to play in a CCG before a playoff game. There's only one goal--that's to win a national title

Let's take Georgia for example. Would they rather have the money from a home game and have to play 2 games to reach the quarters or just have the chance to play 8 v 9 in the first round. I think any program with a real shot at a title isn't going to worry about the money. The amount of money they're all making now is crazy.

I would go back and read the premise of the original question.

It was, would you rather win a conference title and lose in the playoffs.
Or make the final 8 and I guess have a shot at the title. Just no conference title.

I understand what you are saying, but he said if we make the conference title, win it, but lose our first round playoff game.

I think the question is better phrased as, would you rather win a Conference championship, or the CHANCE to win a national championship. I don't care about our crappy conference, so give me the shot at the Natty everytime.

A playoff win is way more valuable than a conference title. A conference title followed by losing your first game is a complete flop.

I have. I want to win BOTH. Gregg, you know full well that winning is fun.

Of course, but it wasn't the question. If I had to pick, I would take the Conference Championship and the National Championship.

I honestly don't expect a national championship as we always seem to be missing one part of the puzzle, but a decent run at it would be awesome.

On the other hand not playing in the CCG gives you an extra week of rest/prep which can pay dividends in the playoffs.

Does anyone think that if we do get in playoffs will we win? I have my doubts Spangy shows he isn’t very good with good teams

Honestly, the more you really think about it, the more you realize (or should anyway) that winning or losing playoff games is how coaches are now going to be defined. Much like the NFL with one exception. Consistently making the playoff is great but it won't be enough. You have to win once you're in the playoff. See Oregon for example, they could go 13-0 while beating Ohio State twice but if they lose in the first round to an 8/9 seed that's all anyone is going to remember--the disappointment. A conference title is...nice but irrelevant if you don't win a playoff game and at least make the semis. And truthfully that may not be enough for the Big Ten/SEC elites.

Yes, unless we get one of the big 4 in the first round we can win that and probably "should" win that

I think we can go on a good run. We are not a complete team, but nobody is. We could have beat OSU with a few breaks.
We will have time for our whole team to get healthy if we do make it to the playoffs which would be really fantastic to have guys like DDS fully healthy and the OL. Depending on where we land in the playoffs IF, BIG IF, we win out, we could possibly be hosting a meh team in the first round and get lucky to be in a weak bracket. OR, we could end up with someone like Bama in the first round. Who knows.

You have a choice in life, be positive, or be negative. We don't control we we land other than our outlook so I choose positivity.

I think another fascinating thing that we'll be seeing after the season is how does a playoff win or loss...or two wins...and a loss...affect how the whole season is perceived.

Previously...it was conference play, then conference championship game...then bowl game...then playoff semi...then national championship game...

That was how a season was judged. Now there's an extra layer of 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 playoff games.

Think of March Madness and the over-emphasis on the year-end tourney. A magical season (think of Virginia's ACC dominance a few years back) ends in the trash heap because of a first-round upset in March.

Will a conference title mean nothing if a team loses in round 1 of the playoff? Will a third-place finish (like Franklin is so notorious for) be forgiven if a team makes it to the national semi after 2 playoff wins? Those will be some darn exciting games on a big stage...how WILL they color the way we see a season?

Can't wait to find out...

Yeah, if you have a great regular season and flop in the playoffs that's all anyone will remember because the regular season is simply about "earning" the opportunity to play for a title. Yeah, a conference title means almost nothing if you then lose in the quarters. And, yes, if Franklin makes the semis this year that makes losing to Ohio State (and possibly a second team) an afterthought.
This is all great by the way--last year we'd already be essentially eliminated from the playoff despite being ranked 6th

Games with teams that have no chance at the playoffs should be cancelled. Same with all the non playoff bowl games.

All bowl games outside the playoff should cease to exist--fact
Regular season games continue--just like in every other sport
We can have bowl games as long as people don't cry about kids sitting out and admit it's a scrimmage
