Australia supported some of the most draconian and stupid Covid policies and deported Djokovic last year because he refused to be vaccinated. New York was even worse by failing to let him enter even though he had Covid and had natural immunity. His principles were particularly admirable because he is in his mid-thirties and doesn't have many years left to play at the top. The disgusting treatment of Djokovic by tennis authorities provides a good window into Left wing extremism and authoritarianism. The long article cited below shows what a decent human being and competitor Djokovic is.

Here is a summary of part of what happened to him: "
In a statement before the 2023 tournament, Djokovic added:
‘What happened to me 12 months ago was not easy for me or my family or team. It was disappointing to leave the country like that but I was really hoping to get permission to play back in Australia. It’s a country where I have had tremendous support. I have always played my best tennis here.
‘Melbourne is close to my heart. What happened was not easy for me to digest, but I had to move on and those circumstances will not replace what I have had in Melbourne and Australia. So I come in with positive emotions.’
Novak was treated like a criminal, deported, and denied the chance to defend his points. Like so many of us, Covid bigotry and fear-mongering saw him robbed of his employment. His win was not only for himself – it is a win for everyone: the persecuted, the coerced, and the concerned. It gives us hope that in the end, the universe corrects the balance." https://www.spectator.com.au/2023/01/novak-djokovic-this-trophy-is-yours-as-much-as-it-is-mine/
