having participated in a handful of election cycles, there has been much admiration for the Dems "ground game". The ground game consists of volunteers to bang on doors, make phone calls, go house to house handing out fliers, and the rest. Typically, for Dems, it consists of union workers and women's groups. In the cities it dwarfs the GOP who has mostly been uber-religious evangelicals.
So I often talk about the voters as only being 1/2 the game. The other half is donations/money and "the ground game". And, I should ask, this is how Dems beat the GOP in ballot harvesting. They go to colleges and retirement homes to fill out the ballots for those who don't know enough to vote correctly on the issues.
Looks like the ground game is suffering, according to MSNBC. That is HUGE.
