Guess USC and LSU now off the Franklin train— is that good or bad?

Who in their right mind would bet on a coach who lost to a 23 point underdog on Homecoming??? He can recruit but results don’t match the hype.. Nice guy but getting tired of him playing the game of how wanted he is elsewhere and extorting more money from Dear Old State.

Time to buck up and coach, James, like you’re paid to do— 1/2 million per game. Have a special recruiting class coming in next year if you do your job and stay humble.

Excellent CEO, talent accumulator, and program ambassador. Too much turnover in assistants, questionable player development, clock management issues, and lack of game day strategy/preparation. Sums up Franklin for me. I don’t know that we will do any better.

Not so sure USC has given up on him just because of one upset.

But LSU definitely has taken him off the list

His real problem is that we still play Ohio State, Michigan, and MSU. He won't be on anyone's list after that
Unfortunately.

He can win and keep a program on track if he has the horses. Doesn’t respond well to thin rosters. I don’t know how we lose to Illinois with IMO the best receivers outside of OSU in the Big Ten.

LSU wants to win NOW, so Franklin is not going to be on their list. USC may invest the time in Franklin but he won’t win there either and he will eventually be fired. So does Franklin choose to make the jump to a program where he may in fact be fired after a couple to several years? Unfortunately it’s gonna take plenty more of these disaster-like Illinois losses for Franklin to be fired at Penn State.

I’m quite sure he’s still on both of their lists. A&M hired Jimbo Fisher after his worst season ever at FSU.

I'm still in Franklin's corner(barely), but he doesn't respond well to hardship generally. Terrible output after losses historically. Questionable road records. Seems to have at least a few emotional letdown games a year. He is thin skinned enough that he won't mention last year, but that was brutal to watch. I dont think Franklin is mentally or emotionally tough and it bleeds down to his team.

Starting to think that when Franklin moves on, it would be for more money but isn't going to be one of these super-high profile jobs. Something like Florida State, maybe.

It takes a lot for a coach to get fired at PSU. He isn't close to that yet.
Not so fast my friend. You do not annually act the way he and his agent does regarding high profile openings. They demand more money, more upgrades, more additions, etc... and then roll out that product yesterday after two weeks off in front of a homecoming crowd and many of your top alumni/donors.

Leadership (yes at PSU) needs to sit him down and reverse course and demand his commitment. He’s either in or he’s out! This has gotten old and his arrogant way to address it creates doubt with the program. It is a huge distraction and it shows with that performance.

Exactly why we are not a blue blood anymore

His real problem is he is an average game day coach. 6 days of the week... he is great.... but on Saturday he is average and Saturday matters most.

Reality is if not for bad luck with the Clifford injury he would be 8-1 right now. If they knock off Michigan next week his is elevated again. He will pretty much get a pass for the last couple of years. Not sure about LSU right now but I still think USC would take him in a minute. Always have supported him but was critical this year of the backup QB situation. He is what he is. A dynamic recruiter and great face and CEO of the program but an above average game day and X’s and O’s Coach. If we lose him there is a good chance people will regret it. Don’t know that in this era we will get someone who can consistently bring the talent to this place he has. Having said that you may be able to offset some of that with better on field real time coaching.

If Franklin leaves, we have the talent in place and an incoming 2022 recruiting class that most coaches would like to inherit. We have consistently had top 2-3 recruiting classes in the Big Ten over the last several years. We have not lived up to those rankings the past two seasons so our recruiting classes were either overrated or we have under-developed players. What is it? But both scenarios are highly critical of Franklin.

No one is going to inherit that recruiting class. If Franklin leaves a bunch of them are going to jump ship. The new coach may be able to keep some of them but many will leave. That is just historically how recruiting works. Additionally, over the last 6 years after his first two years dealing with sanctions, besides Ohio State who has really been better in our division? We simply are not going to overcome Ohio State on a yearly basis due to many inherent logistical advantages that have been discussed here many times before.

Depends on when Franklin leaves, before or after the early signing period date. Reality also dictates that you won’t have an entire recruiting class decommit. Franklin has always said his commits commit to a school, not to a coaching staff. LSU has had 1 decommit since Orgeron got fired, and USC has had 2 decommits since Helton got fired.

USC and LSU aren't waiting until after the early signing period to hire a coach. That's why they both got rid of their coaches early. They are going to hire someone and give them enough of a chance to try to sign a decent class in 2022. If Franklin is leaving it will be well before any of our current class has signed.

I'm getting tired of the Franklin criticism, he has made Penn Stater football a brand name again. I hope he stays but if USC is better for him and his family then move on, enough discussion. Let the man coach without these distractions from people who only know how to complain.
