Been reading alot about Gulibon on the forums. Got to watch him wrestle all three of his matches. I'm not going to get into should he have won/could he have, etc. All I remember is Jimmy getting up after being pinned and calmly walking over to the center of the mat, calmly shaking hands and acting like a gentleman. Saw the same with Clark from Iowa. After he lost in the finals, he actually walked after Tomasello to congratulate him and shake his hand. There were other examples, but those two just caught my attention. Will be rooting for both of them at NCAA's. More often than not, it's when you lose you show your true colors. Both these guys were class acts.

I missed Jimmy's match you refer to, but I commented to my brother right after Clark's loss that he showed a lot of class after his last second loss to Tomasello!

I also commented to those watching with me what a good sport Clark was last night. NATO was very energetic after the win and appeared to be distracted by all the energy but Cory Clark wouldn't leave the mat until he shook his hand. Clark had to work to get NATO to shake his hand.

And for the record I'm not saying NATO is a poor sport, I just think he was caught up in the moment.

I also thought Sanderson showed class when Hall lost. He was in the background and applauded Hall's effort. The Brands brothers should have the same composure. What was the idea of throwing the flag like a javelin.

Tomasello was not being a jerk or anything. The refs were checking video to see if the escape was achieved prior to time running out.
My impression was Cory knew he lost Tomasello prior to the horn. Tomasello was unsure and still in competitive mode.

Great match. Great competitors. Neither ever behaves on the mat with anything other than grit and class.

They are terrible for our sport as Coaches....Have a great friend from Iowa who is a huge wrestling fan and hates them both....He always tells me we are so lucky to have a great MAN as a Head Coach.....That's pretty bad....He says all the time they make jerks out of themselves and they only ones who cheer over their antics are limited in the mind....Very true....lol...He don't think they will be in Iowa for long but getting Spencer from us may help both of them....

I don't think Brands are "bad" guys. They just have a different style and that was shaped by Gable. I do feel like their methods are a bit out-dated for today's generation and Cael's approach is much more in tuned with today's kids. But there are still a bunch of kids that gravitate towards the Brands for exactly who they are - they are going to be tough to beat in two years.

spyker, Yesterday at 8:56 PM
Whoever had "8:56 pm, approx 3 hrs after the tournament ended" in the pool, won.

Coach's behavior at the B1G Conference Championships and NCAA's is as varied as the quality of posting on this forum, and the class of the characters in this community.

There's a part of me that admires the heck out of every one of them, Ryan, Manning, Brands, etc. included.

There's another part of me that says; no way I'd want my child around that behavior, and given that life is full of choices, I'd much prefer a coaching staff like ours. Life at that age (and all ages) is about more than wrestling, and so it's about all the intangibles for me.

What I saw, and those around me saw, in fact the whole arena saw, was some coaches and assistant coaches acting like petulant children. Finger-pointing, yelling-and-screaming at the opposing coach, crotch-grabbing (take that!!) after a victory, coaching from the sidelines, throwing review flags, stomping when they didn't get their way...it really did look like a kindergarten at times. Sad really, as these coaches and their assistants are leaders of young men who will look up to them and some will imitate that behavior because it's tolerated. Somewhere in all of this, a couple of these guys have exceeded their Peter Principle.

roar, i'll take our guys all day, every day. the kids represent ps extremely well, and that comes from the top. the team responds well on & off the mats. and they must really like it. had to chuckle when, with a big hill to climb, they came out to warm up by playing baseball with a tennis ball. talk about relaxed.

They play duck, duck, goose too...not enough room for dodgeball :).

Always admired any athlete or coach that handle victory with class and defeat with dignity.

Overall I disagree with the dislike of the Brands. True, their matside antics leave something to be desired (I think Terry is worse than Tom in this). But I understand that off the mat they're good guys, care about their wrestlers, and they are great ambassadors for the sport. Tom does a great interview. Now, I strongly agree that we're very fortunate to have Cael & co., but I'm not one to knock the Brands.

I saw the duck, duck, goose before the Lehigh dual. Have they done it before other duals as well? I got a kick out of it! I'm not sure many coaches in the old days would have wanted their wrestlers doing that before a match.

I didn't see too many Iowa fans on any boards after the tournament: Many of them became Ohio State fans. For whatever reason.

Tom Brands does not bother me as a coach. The coaches that bother me, are the coaches that game the rules, during a match, to gain a competitive advantage for their wrestler, like Ryan and Perry.

Why doesn't the NCAA establish a rule limiting where a coach can go on the mats.
My son played basketball in a conference that required the coaches to stay seated except for times out. Worked like a charm.

3.13.2 Tournaments. For tournaments, an 8-foot restricted zone shall be
placed in any two corners of the mat. It is recommended when using matside
video review that the corner of the mat directly to the right of matside
table be the red corner, and the corner of the mat directly to the left
of the mat-side table be the green corner. The 8 feet should be measured
from the corner, along a line connecting the center to that corner. (See
diagram in Rule 1.8.)

A maximum of three team personnel will be permitted in the
restricted area. If three team personnel are used, two must hold coaching
credentials and one must be a properly credentialed medical person.
A chair will be placed behind the coaches for a credentialed medical
person. Unauthorized team personnel in the corner shall be penalized
according to Rule 3.13.5.

3.13.3 Coaches and Medical Personnel. Coaches may leave this zone only to
(1) approach the scorer’s table to correct the score or time or to ask for an
interpretation of score or time; (2) approach the scorer’s table to question
the referee’s application of a rule or request a video review; or (3) move
toward the mat during a charged timeout or at the end of a match. (See
Rule 3.12.) Medical personnel may leave the restricted zone and move
onto the mat only during an injury or blood timeout.

3.13.4 Badgering - Coach or Team Member. Badgering the referee by the
coaching staff or any member of the team shall not be permitted. Failure
to comply shall be considered control of mat area and shall be penalized
according to Rule 3.13.5.

3.13.5 Failure to Comply - Control of Mat Area. Failure to comply will be
treated in the following manner: first violation - warning; second violation -
deduct one team point; third violation - deduct two team points and remove
individual(s) involved from the premises. These offenses are accumulated per
institution throughout each dual meet and for the duration of multiple
duals and tournaments, including dual-meet tournaments. Penalties for
control of the mat area shall be cumulative and sequential. (See Rule
7.7.7.)

Had the opportunity to watch an Iowa practice this year and meet Tom and Terry they were kind and courteous. The atmosphere in the room was excellent and fun. There presence was awe inspiring. Yeah i prefer Cael for a hundred reasons but watching them run a practice was something I'll never forget.
