Ever get a message, I am a hacker with access to your system, unless you pay me in crypto currency i will send messages to everyone in your email? Is this a hoax, what advice do you offer?

well think about this, if you DO pay someone who is extorting you do you think that they'll go away? or will they just asking for more money?

It’s a scam. Delete it and try not to open any messages from suspicious senders b/c they know if it was opened and will continue to send more.

If it's a ransomware attack, your files will be encrypted and you won't have access to them.

If it's a scammer asking for money because of an implied threat, it's no different than a Nigerian scam where a prince wants your bank account information in order to, ahem, send you millions of dollars.

Back up your data regularly, stay on top of all software patches and updates, and by all means, come to this site for expert information on any subject.

Yes, I've had it. In my case they included a password of mine in the email that I had used a few times. The subject line of the email was only the password, thus I opened it. The email itself said that they got my password by using key logging software they had installed on my machine, etc. Thankfully I was able to piece together that much of the email was impossible and I quickly googled and found out that a store I had used had been compromised. That is how they got my name, email, and password.

As others have said, it's a as scam.

To all, thank you so much, now that PSU degree I got almost 60 years ago has paid for itself. Kidding, it has been a fabulous education, paid for itself multi times over multi years and provided a wonderful life. Thank you Board and thank you Penn State.
