Total project cost will push $1B.....

Link doesn't appear to work but here's a rendering courtesy of the PSU subreddit...

Had many classes in Hammond. I believe the IE dept offices were on the 2nd floor.....

What was the least favorite class I ever took in Hammond??
Gotta be ME22

It would explode as soon as he got to the "Acknowledgements" page.
Probably, but I believe that norm is an optimist at heart and will be pleased to see that they have listed all of the "Future Development Opportunities" that exist beyond just $1 billion Phase 1 and Phase 2.

I can remember as a kid in the early 90s thinking those building were an eyesore. They weren’t any better inside. Surprised it took this long to do something about them. The engineers of all people deserve to be in nicer buildings.

that building was an eye sore in the 80's as well. Always got a weird vibe when I walked past it, but then I was an art major so it was probably just a disturbance in the force. ;)

Over 4 year period in early 70s, I worked in the Computer Labs in Hammond. Many happy memories.

Hammond is an insanely ugly building. Has been for 30+ years.
What that 50's 60's futuristic look doesnt appeal? As much as it needs an upgrade visually there is something to be said for time period architecture even if "ugly" There are plenty of new looking buildings around

Isn't the demise of brick and mortar at hand anyway?

Must be scrambling to figure out where to put all of the College of Engineering people in the interim.
It looks like the plan is to build a few new buildings west of Atherton to house engineering students, then to demo and replace Hammond, the remaining Engineering Units and a large portion of Sackett. It sounds the the central hub of the College of Engineering will be west of Atherton going forward. As a graduate of the college, renovations to these buildings is long overdue.

Why not just build an art museum in the middle, kill two birds with one Barron

The old story was back in the 70’s was that Hammond was supposed to be a tower but they thought the ground was too unstable (Karst topography) for a tower so basically they laid the tower down on its side in the redesign. Definitely one of the ugliest buildings on campus.

That’s the same thing I had heard in the early ‘80’s. Don’t know if it’s just an urban legend or if there’s any truth to it. I just know it’s one butt-ugly building.

On Barron's part. He's playing Pinnacle while everyone else is playing Go Fish.
I meant on your part. Nevertheless, yes, he's a genius and a fine painter too.

To be fair, I've been told by people who I consider to be credible that he was once a fine scientist.

Didn't they say something similar about lot 80?

Yes. Supposedly East Halls were supposed to be built there, but the ground was too unstable. When I was living in East Halls a sinkhole opened up in parking lot 80 and I believe swallowed up a couple of cars.

It seems that all construction associated with the entire master plan will cost that much.....

Hammond and Sackett.....

"Phase 1 consists of a series of capital projects that can be implemented within the $370M budget approved by the University for the funding cycle 2018-2023. This phase includes new building construction, demolition, renovations, infrastructure, and campus landscape design. Phase 1 is also intended to reduce the backlog of deferred maintenance, especially associated with Hammond, Sackett and the Engineering Units. In total, Phase 1 consists of the demolition of 304,000 GSF in the Sackett Wings, Kunkle, Engineering Units A, B, C and Hammond; the addition of 393,000 GSF of new construction with the building of West 1, West 2 and a new north addition to the Sackett Building. Also in Phase 1 is the renovation of 48,000 GSF in the historic Sackett Building on the Core Campus. The current capital plan is not intended to be a growth plan for COE, but to address approximately $59M in maintenance backlog by demolishing Hammond, Engineering Units A, B, C, and the renovation of Sackett."

The way I heard the story was it was supposed to be nine floors, but the ground couldn't support it. So the made it into 3 three-story building side by side (or something like that). The way the hallways zig and zag, it's definitely a believable story.
