First of all, thank you all for your acknowledgement. As others have said, it was an honor to serve.
Second, I have experienced unsettling feelings over the last couple decades, wondering if it was worth it. Most of this was brought on by what I see as a decline in the values that made the U.S. a great nation. I've asked myself if I'd do it all again given the opportunity. For a while, I answered "no" as often as "yes."
However, when I think of all the magnificent men and women with whom I served and when I truly look at the vast majority of Americans, I have found myself answering that same question lately with a resounding "HELL, YES!" My newly restored faith in America and Americans is the reason I know we'll recover from the rioting and looting, the vitriol - often viciously spewed - of the campaigns for nearly two years, and the rends even seen within families over who voted for whom.
I believe in my grandfather's generation as The Greatest Generation. I also believe that every generation can be great if we just get out of our own way. The speed at which the world is changing and the new and unique challenges we face force us to step up. Our grandfathers would expect nothing less.
Happy Veteran's Day!
