Anthony Lubrano posted the following 60 minutes interview with Joe Paterno by Harry Reasoner. I really enjoyed it so I thought I would share it.

It was great seeing all the campus footage from 1978, the year that I graduated, but also to see the character that Joe exhibited. Some interesting tidbits were:
- at the time Joe had a better winning percentage than Bear Byrant or Woody Hayes
- 94% of all scholarship players earned their degrees
- JVP quote -- in football like in life you can either get better or get worse, you can't stay the same

I wish I could like that post more than once.

Don't you just love living in the past. Did you notice the 2017 CFB season started?

I love this quote "in football like in life you can either get better or get worse, you can't stay the same".
Too bad he didn't take his own advice.

Well worth watching. Harry Reasoner pointed out Joe turned down 5 pro offers, including one of $250,000 by the New England Patriots. I miss Joe.

He said that he was flattered by people who wanted to pay him more than he was worth, but that he enjoyed working at a college and living in State College. Joe did not know what he was worth. Penn State got a bargain

I appreciate my past and the lessons I have learned in life including those at Penn State and those that came from Joe Paterno. I can see no harm in posting a link to a video that is testament to Joe's character

Yes, I have noticed that football season has started again and the Nittany Lions had a nice win over Akron on Saturday and have an important game this coming week. If reading a post about Paterno or anything else causes you consternation, then please do yourself a favor and ignore it.

I believe that Joe lived an exemplary life and has gotten a bum rap over the last few year. I believe that he will eventually be redeemed.

What do you have against Joe? In what aspect of his life do you think he got worse over time?

Why is it that posters like you can not understand that people can appreciate the past and support the present team at the same time?

I have been going to Penn State football games since the early 1980's. A few games a year. I always tried to go to the games that were not going to be televised.

I never had season tickets until 2012. In 2012 I was living in NEPA and woke up at 3am and drove my son to the Rise and Rally event at 6am before Bill O'Brien's first summer workout. I bought tickets and traveled to Ireland to support the team and James Franklin.

I get it. You like to sh_t on any thing Paterno. GFY

Too bad your father did not wear a condom

Most who journey into the past do not live there. They learn, they are inspired, they develop a sense of who they are. We have the History Channel, best selling books like Alexander Hamilton (which I just finished), movies like Dunkirk.... the list goes on and on. Watching an interview with Joe Paterno, or reading a book about his life, is no different. He was a giant in the history of college football and this university. He will always be so.

What did you learn from Paterno? I don't remember him teaching any classes. Did you learn
the proper way of yelling at players, assistants and refs? How about blowing off reporters or telling them
they don't know what they're talking about? Did you ever even meet Paterno?

And from this quote "in football like in life you can either get better or get worse, you can't stay the same",
I was referring to staying the same. Paterno was trying to play 1970's football 30 years later with decidedly mixed results. I am happy to have a young, innovative Coach and staff. I really enjoyed
reading yesterday's news and seeing a reference to "Penn State's high octane offense". Embrace
the present. Life is too short to wallow in the past.

I agree. I too enjoy now being just like everyone else. Bloated salaries. Oversized staffs. Yep. Football first.

We have become what Freeh said we were but weren't in reality. That saddens me tremendously.

What did Joe teach me? He taught me that academics come before athletics. He taught me on time meant arriving 15 minutes early. And he taught me that you play for overtime when you've tried and failed on the previous play. But hey, what did he know?

Paterno was as smart as my dad. I learned those from him. How did you make it through
high school without Paterno's sage words about academics.

You can like Franklin and Paterno...it's allowed.

Damn Osprey, I thought you were just a dick on the test board. Turns out you're one of those full-time dicks.

Not possible. I've tried. The minute I like Franklin, I write off the past and refuse to acknowledge Joe. The minute I reflect positively on Joe and all the good things he did, I call for Franklin to be fired.

Full time? He works overtime perfecting his craft. He just might be the first poster that I'd seriously consider slugging with a baseball bat if I ever met him in person.

Joe taught many people many things including myself, as both a football coach and a teacher of life. Joe pushed this university to demand more of itself. He challenged the bot to make PSU a world class university. He changed the face of women's sports at Penn State in his short term as AD. Joe and Sue made significant contributions to my home town helping people and our culture. If you think Joe was just a football coach, you are a fool.

But one more thing he did was he took a bunch of kids like me from good families with good parents and demanded more of ourselves than we personally thought was possible. To Joe it was more important to be a good person than a good football player.

None of this makes me live in the past. I am a huge supporter of the current team and Coach Franklin. My wife and I have built a nice relationship with him and I think the world of the guy. He holds many of the same characteristics of Coach Paterno. Penn State football is in great hands.

I feel sorry for you that you haven't had a strong mentor or guide beyond your family that made a difference in your life. It's pretty obvious you haven't.

Your father would be disappointed with you. Unless, of course, he was also an a$$ hole.

Nothing wrong with remembering the good that Joe gave the world.

Name some good other than football. For you living in an alternative universe, 99%
of the people in the world never heard of him.

The Paterno Library. Sue and Joe Paterno led the campaign that raised around $14 million to build the new library.

I didn't need a mentor beyond my family to make me a productive, successful,
happy and popular human being. You apparently had some contact with Paterno.
Most of these cult members never met him.

There's not a chance in the world that you're a happy person. You are filled with so much hate towards Paterno that you could not let this totally benign thread pass without interjecting yourself and ruining it. That kind of hatred seeps out into every area of your life. And if you're popular, it's likely only because you always pick up the tab, fearing that if you didn't no one would hang around you.

You are an idiot. Those that worship at the alter of Joe are obviously the pitiful and sad
human beings. I am extremely happy that we have a young innovative coaching staff.
I think it's wonderful that our coach and all the assistants travel to recruit the best talent.
I love that PSU is a contender in the Big Ten instead of rolling over for Michigan and OSU.
What you call hatred is relief and confidence in the future. And you cult members start
a new "benign" thread about Joe almost every day. Get a life.
