'Story that needs to be told': Family, friends interviewed for documentary about Johnstown's Haselrig

Back in March, when watching the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, Mike Monsell started doing some reading about the history of the tournament. He came across the name Carlton Haselrig.

Mifflin County native, Mike Monsell (Chief Logan / Indian Valley HS alum ) is the brains behind this endeavor ... for those who remember Chief Logan, Mike's father John was the head football and baseball coach.

It's cool that somebody's doing a story on him. I didn't see a mention of his amazing feat of winning a PIAA state championship at a high school without a wrestling team.

Carlton is a story that will never be matched

WHAT?? You don't think there has ever been a guy riding a moped with his helmet on backwards while under the influence?? It happens in my neighborhood about once a week . Ok....maybe they didn't win a State wrestling championship while their school had no wrestling team. OK.....maybe they didn't win SIX NCAA wrestling championships...which had never been done before or since. OK....maybe they didn't get drafted by an NFL team while never playing college football.......OK.......maybe they didn't earn ALL-Pro honors in the NFL as an offensive lineman. OK....maybe they didn't win an MMA fight in their 40's. BUT......they did attend the same school ( briefly) as him......my Alma- Mater.......UPJ !!! Very Slight Difference

All that and I think I told this story before about Carlton. Previously I stated I never wrestled but gathered up all the knowledge I could from camps for my boys. When I was at a tournament, I grabbed the smartest guy in the room to coach my sons.

We were at Ligioneir High School for a youth tournament. The younger son kept getting caught in a cradle and lost in the winners bracket.

I was pissed, far from home, knew noone so I grabbed Carlton. Carlton was one of the referees. He was kind enough as he took us in one of the side hall ways, got down on the floor with my kid spenting about 5 minutes of his time helping my son avoid the move, all as he was in his zebra ref clothes. The tournament was winding down so he had time. I will never forget his kindness. Jr. took 3rd. So add to the above list PIAA referee. Uncle Bruce was his mentor.

Cool Story. I watched a LOT of wrestling matches that Bruce Haslerig refereed. He was a highly respected ref. I also had the opportunity to teach one of the Haselrig "yutes". He was related to both .....I think Bruce was his uncle but not certain. As a 8th or 9th grader He stood outside my classroom at Cochran Jr. High between classes one time and as a 6th grader was sprinting down the hall.....he stuck out a foot and we watched this kid tumble several times over. Haselrig looked at me with a broad smile and said : "You shouldn't run in the halls kid.....right Mr. G" ? He became an immediate favorite of mine. Sadly/Hilariously he came to my class one day to tell me he was being sent to alternative Ed.....spending the rest of the year in the trailer at the end of the football field. I was kinda bummed so I asked him what happened. Gospel truth....he said he was waiting for the bus when two kids were playing a game they called "Chicken".......where they would fire a pocket knife into the ground as close to each other's foot as possible. The first one to "chicken out" and move his foot was the "loser". Haselrig asked what happens if you actually hit the foot with the knife and they replied...you automatically "lose". I know most of you are guessing what happens next . Haselrig asked if he could play and they unwisely agreed. He took the pocket knife and fired it directly into his foot and declared :" You Win".....and got on the bus. The school district did not see the humor in the fact that the "Winner" had his OWN knife stuck in his foot. Luckily the blade went between the toes and he suffered little damage.....but I lost a smart/funny kid for over half the year. I will never forget that event.....when I realized that I must be a horrible human being because I was actually had great sympathy for the "Loser" who played by the rules TRUE Story
