Have we ever won on a Hail Mary?

Intercepting Terrelle Pryor's Hail Mary (of sorts - I still don't know why he threw it all the way into the End Zone) in Columbus in 2008. Does that count?

Not that I recall, but I can remember us losing to Cal on one in, I think, 1965 or 1966. Listened to it on the radio, and as a boy was, of course, devastated. That's an awful way to lose a game.

1969 Orange Bowl, Chuck Burkhart-to-Bob Campbell at the 3-yard line in the final minute. There were still three offensive plays after that for PSU, which scored with 15 seconds left, but Burkhart heaved the ball just past two Kansas defenders and into Campbell's arms.

If you're talking about a long pass on the final play of the game, then no. At least not during or after the Paterno Era.

We were rarely behind under Joe.

That's the only one I could recall. McQuery to JJ in 98?

I think it was 97. Collins QB'd in 1994, Wally Richardson had 2 years, 1995 and 1996, and McQ only had one year after Richardson - 1997. It was the end of the first half in a home game against Wisconsin, and Penn State was leading the game and if I remember, was in control the whole game and won.

I remember listening to Herb Menhardts long FG as time expired. It wasnt a hail mary but i will always remember Bobby Engrams catch and dive vs MSU in 95. Watched that game in the waiting room at the hospital as we didnt know if My brither waa going to survive a car accident

Why am I the only one that doesn't view the Florida pass as a "hail mary?" That term is usually reserved for sending an army of receivers out and just tossing the ball up for grabs, and hoping you come down with it somehow. The Florida play was nothing like that. Yes it was a long pass on the last play of the game but it was basically a WR in 1 on 1 coverage that broke open and the QB found him. To me at least, there's a difference.

That Florida play was going to be a hail mary, then the Slugging Shoopers didn't both do actually defend the play, and Florida had a guy wide open

I believe the pass to JJ was in the Louisville game in '97. At Louisville.

The term was coined after this play: only one receiver in the area

A Hail Mary is what Flutie did against BC, what Colorado did against Michigan. Florida was just a one on one , excitable yes, bust just a game ending chunk play.
Woodpecker got it right in this thread.

Do you mean on a long throw as time ran out, or when we were not playing well and PSU fans said Hail Mary's and the team turned things around and won?
LMAO!
The first one.
However, I can remember praying for this team on MANY occasions from 00-04 and 12-16(Minnesota game)

That last drive against illinois in '95. I was on the phone with my dad and several fraternity brothers, pacing back and forth behind our couch. What site that was. We were calling back and forth ... crazy.

Lots of Hail Mary's were said and I'm an Episcopalian.

FWIW, there was a similar scene last March during the wrestling finals. I love it when my staid and in control dad laughs in pure joy.
1994?
