Tressel appointed lieutenant governor to replace Jon Husted.

Tressel deserve to be fired because he lied about ineligible players. However, the underlying offense, particularly in light of nil now, was trivial -- players selling their own stuff for a small amount of money prior to graduating.

Personally I like Tressel as a coach because he took care of his players. For instance, he told third year players that if they would be drafted in the first round they should leave Ohio state. Not Pete Carroll's modus operandi.

This is a very odd appointment, IMHO. Tressel is 72 years old and has zero future in politics beyond this appointment. So it smells of "favors". It should be noted that Tressel was the President of the Youngstown State University for ten years after leaving tOSU and football coaching altogether.

Tressel’s problems were more complicated as were his players’ indiscretions.

I don’t think Tressel is a bad guy but he was trying to manage a cesspool without actually cleaning it up. The players were hanging out in a full service tattoo parlor/gambling parlor/money laundering/“dating” service. An FBI agent emailed Tressel to warn him of a pending raid, signing it “Go Bucks!” Tressel did nothing.

I am not pretending he had easy solutions but he was caught in the cesspool and pled only to lying. Complicated.

The lieutenant governor doesn't do anything, so I just look at it as a public relations ploy. I believe the governor is term limited and maybe no one else wanted the job. Tressel has a lot of support and Goodwill in Ohio and if he focuses on a couple of not super important issues, maybe he can accomplish something.

DeWine is done in 27. and i agree the position is toothless but is typically used to tee up the next Gov candidate. At 72, that ain't gonna be Tress. Vivek is the leading candidate and maybe DeWine is just clearing the decks for him.

You are right this probably has something to do with teeing up the next candidate for governor. Maybe Dewine didn't want to get in the middle of that and punted.

You may know more about this than I do. I do remember when it first came up that Tressel said that he was worried about some serious head cracking that may occur. However, from what I saw nothing name of this. The thing that a lot of PSU people don't like to acknowledge is that showed that Ohio state was not paying its players. The players were selling valuable memorabila or something like $500 to $1500 (They could have gotten much more if they were more sophisticated) just so they could afford tattoos. If they were really getting paid under the table, they wouldn't need to raise this small amount of money to pay for tattoos.

Maybe Vivek wasn't ready or didn't want the Lt. position so DeWine took care of an aging old friend but left the passing lanes wide open for Vivek.

Seriously, Tressel always came across as a perfect politician. His nickname was "the Senator" and would answer any question directed at him...... The problem - his answers never had any substance and he would leave you more confused than when the question was asked. He was a great CF coach, however

He was showing his true politician credentials the year that Ohio state was number one in Michigan was number two and in the coaches poll he abstained for voting for Michigan's place in the poll. (At a time when the coaches poll played a role and who would play in the BCS championship game) Got Lloyd Carr's goat who called it a "slick" move. I enjoyed that situation.

AJ Hawk for Secretary of Treasury - he doesn’t trust banks so keeps his money in a safe place - under the bed
That probably cost him the Butkus award which went to PSU linebacker, whose name I forget. Even the PSU linebacker said he was surprised by what happened and him winning the award over Hawk. On the other hand, the PSU linebacker had a better pro career than did AJ Hawk.

Later addition. I think I remember the name of the PSU linebacker, who is Paul Paluzny. (sp)

Couldn't go wrong with either. Both were great CF linebackers

Was Tressel the coach who threw a bomb right after Talifiero was almost paralyzed or was that someone else?

I feel like that's true of most coaches. Franklin never answers a question. Tomlin rambles nonsense. Using them as I see them the most often

I'd be shocked if that was true. Tressel has always been a pretty good guy. I don't know him, never met him. But everyone I know who knows him completely loves him. He really delivered tOSU from being a top 20 program to being an annual contender for a Natty in the age of SEC dominance and corruption. Myer took that program and simply extended it (both won one natty, IIRC). Youngstown State improved under his leadership and that is tough to do for a school like that in the current university environment. For example, graduation rates at YSU improved from 35% to 49% for a school that takes just about anyone who applies, as part of their charter to help underprivileged in the Rust Belt.

Don't forget, Tressel went from head coach at YSU straight to tOSU. That is quite a jump (and he donated $1m in 2007 to YSU).

I understand things got out of control at tOSU with the golden pants trinkets. And I understand he "lied" to the AD (still wonder if he was scapegoated). But he's had a stellar career aside from that.

What's next, OSU AD?
Governor.......he's qualified according to the dimwit OSU fanbase. After all, he was 9-1 against Michigan and won a NC......that makes him more than qualified according to those dipshits

It is essentially a public relations position with no power. He ran Youngstown State as chancellor for seven or eight years with no problem. He is way more qualified than some people who have been elected and who were appointed federal judges in the last four or five years. (For instance, one person who allegedly served as a law clerk for several years didn't know the standard of review that courts of appeal apply to district courts. Simply unbelievable.)

Mike dewine has been a popular and pretty good governor and won the last election with 60% of the vote. He was the one who made the appointment and his evaluation of qualifications should be given some deference.)

I only question the age. Makes no sense politically. Take a 40-year-old who is an up-and-comer and give them statewide name recognition. I suspect a favor was granted. it is really a wasted appointment in any other case.

Came across an interview of Tressel and Urban Meyer that occurred recently. Tressel was thoughtful and mentioned for instance that he felt that if it wasn't broke, you should still break it. Meaning that when things have gone well you shouldn't rest on your laurels. Also, said that every year he would expose the team to a particular book and discuss it with the team over the course of the year. Comes across as way more thoughtful and intelligent than most politicians.

I get the feeling DeWine doesn’t like Ramaswamy. And even if he does like him, no governor would ever want him as Lt Gov.

Vivek is a high profile guy, gives great interviews, has tremendous energy and very creative ideas. He would strongly overshadow any governor in the country, especially a low key guy like DeWine. No way he gets that job.

Picking Tressel is interesting. Does he need approval by the legislature? Tressel would quickly be approved if needed. And as he is a low key kinda guy, he has the weight to help DeWine do things without stealing the limelight.

As for Tressel…… he is a better person than he gets credit for here. He certainly failed in that scandal but it was small compared to a lot of scandals.

He really stressed education, tried to lead the boys into quality men and not just players. He was great at Y State in both academics and funding.

At his age it’s interesting he took it. Had to be well off financially and would make it rain on the speakers tour. Probably a guy that hated retirement and felt he could make a difference.

He does not need approval from the legislature. I would have thought he’d have picked a person in a purple congressional district that is in his/her mid thirties.

DeWine seems pretty independent of party politics, from what I see out of state. I don’t think he cares to help the party. At his age he just doesn’t care.

Tressel has a lot of respect across the state and can help the Gov get things through the legislature. Any idea if DeWine has any particular things he wants to do before he is gone?

And it could be they are just friends that trust each other. Someone without bigger ambitions and will follow the Gov game plan. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I always liked Coach Tressel. Some things happened under his watch that shouldn't have, but I think he is a good man and great coach. His appointment is of course just as a place holder as DeWine doesn't want to be the kingmaker in the upcoming election.

Vivek comes from a high-end academic background. He needs seasoning as a politician. For instance, a friend of mine worked for him in a non political position and was on call essentially 24 hours a day. He was paid an average wage and Vivek didn't once express appreciation for how hard my friend was working.

Although, many of his ideas are very good, he lacks the common touch and has some nerdy ideas that could be disastrous politically.

It wasn't an FBI agent. It was a guy named Chris Cicero who was the attorney for the tat shop owner and a former Buckeye player. Those emails weren't discovered until almost a year after they were sent. The story first broke in December of 2010 after the end of the regular season but before the Sugar bowl game against Arkansas. The school found out when law enforcement approached the school questioning whether the memorabilia may have been stolen. The players owned up to what they had done, OSU self reported it and the NCAA issued the original suspensions and closed the case. At that time, Tressel maintained that he had no knowledge of what the players had done. ( obviously not true) It was the following May in 2011 that those emails were discovered during an in house email search related to another matter ( not an NCAA issue) that showed Tressel was aware before the beginning of the 2010 season, knowingly played ineligible players, and lied on the annual NCAA compliance forms that all coaches submit every year. That led to OSU being sanctioned and Tressel's downfall.

Chris Cicero had a very checkered career and I am pretty sure he is permanently disbarred. Had a dalliance with former Judge Deborah O Neill (ex sister in law of former baseball player Paul O Neill. She eventually resigned from the practice of law) His dalliance with O Neill was described this way:

"Cicero’s law license also was suspended for one year in 1997 for bragging that he was having a sexual affair with then-Judge Deborah P. O’Neill while she had appointed him to represent a criminal client in a case before her." https://www.dispatch.com/story/news/courts/2017/04/19/tressel-tat-tipster-lawyer-faces/21334632007/
