Often, the biggest and most meaningful news stories do not even get mentioned on the front page of any newspaper or in any TV reports. Many of those stories involve some scientific or technological development that promises to have lasting, positive impact.
I read this morning, in a small blurb on the back page of the San Francisco Chronicle business section, that representatives from Facebook and Microsoft joined with Virginia's governor and two Senators in Williamsburg to announce and celebrate the completion of a new high speed data cable that stretches across the Atlantic Ocean, . The 4,000 mile cable runs from Bilbao, Spain to Virginia Beach.
According to the Chronicle article, this new cable can transmit 160 terabits of data per second. That's 16 million times faster than the average home internet connection. Put another way, it could stream 71 million high definition videos at once.
The cable is named "Marea," which is Spanish for "tide." It is a joint project between Microsoft, Facebook and global telecommunications company Telxius. The cable will help meet growing demand for internet infrastructure across the globe.
Just a small bit of good news in a sea of puerile media reports about the culture wars..
