Hillary Clinton’s testimony before the House Benghazi committee — a public hearing, at her request — produced more heat than light. Thank Clinton and committee Democrats, who were too busy playing to the cameras.
For those who’ve followed the investigation carefully, Clinton’s hours-long testimony only provided more questions than answers about her role during and after the 2012 terror attack that left four US officials dead.
That’s especially true of her flatly dishonest testimony — accompanied by icy stares of contempt and boredom — about her ongoing relationship with her family’s veteran propagandist-fixer, Sidney Blumenthal.
She suggested that Blumenthal — who was on a $10,000-a-month retainer from the Clinton Foundation — was little more than an Internet troll who kept bombarding her with “unsolicited” e-mails about Libya.
In fact, he was running a private spy network and had major business interests in toppling Libya’s government. Clinton not only thanked him profusely for his intelligence reports, she passed many of them on to the Obama White House.
But not before she erased his name as the source of information — no surprise, since the president’s staff had vetoed her plans to hire him at State.
Blumenthal had her private e-mail address and used it to send her hundreds of messages on Libya. Ambassador Chris Stevens — who was murdered in the attack — lacked that access, so she never saw his desperate appeals for more security, which the State Department ignored.
“No one ever came to me and said we should shut down our compound in Benghazi,” Clinton testified.
We also learned that, even as State was telling the world the attack was a reaction to an online anti-Islam video, Clinton was telling a very different story — the true one — to Egypt’s prime minister, to the victims’ families and even to her daughter Chelsea.
“We know that the attack in Libya had nothing to do with the film,” she was saying privately.
Yet she bizarrely said Thursday that “I still believe to this day the video played a role.”
Believe? Three years later, this much we know: Four Americans died and this administration tried to cover up the reason why. And Libya — once hailed as an Obama-Clinton foreign-policy success — is in total meltdown, with a growing ISIS presence.
