What is the point of Hillary Clinton's recent posing with normal folks and enduring travel via a commercial airlines that we all know she doesn't like? Clinton is not trying to pay penance for the fat speaking fees she has raked in and for all her cross-country flights on private jets. It's not that she wanted to fly coach and schlep around in a van all these years but wasn't allowed to.
All this is just her developing a cosmetic veneer of familiarity with American middle-class life. Simply put, Clinton must engineer a personal transition to populism. Her problem is that she can't just declare she is the true champion of the down-and-out and of middle America. It's just not credible. So she needs to go through this cynically designed, awkward process of acting "normal," using regular Americans as props, to tee things up for the compliant media who want to help her sell a new image and promote her campaign.
