Hire Earl Grant as Men’s BB coach

He would be a perfect fit for PSU.
That’s actually not a bad name to throw out, and someone who hasn’t blown up so much that he probably wouldn’t consider us and hold out for a better mid-major or P5 job. Interesting.

Nice to know that there's someone on this board who follows college basketball close enough to recommend someone like Earl Grant. No idea whether Grant would be interested, but he has the type of profile Barbour would likely seek if she has to find a new MBB at season's end.

Probably not, too expensive, and Barbour is not going to buy Chambers out of a contract that she just extended last year.

Now that Nate Oates ship has sailed who cares. Sandy didn't take my advice 2 years ago and now Buffalo has lapped us in hoops.

so is PSU's in MBB

True, although the following are surprising stats: there are three Big Ten schools who have never been to a Final Four. We are not one of them. We have been to the Sweet 16 more times than several Big Ten schools - including Minnesota, which shocked me.

And hasn’t Chambers shown other coaches that it is possible to bring talent in to Penn State?

Agree on this. Earl signed a 5 yr extension last year at CofC but it is only for about $450,000 per year with some small bonuses. I think he got an extra 30k for getting to NCAA last year. He is very affordable since 1mm would be a big jump for his family.

Live in Charleston and have met Earl and he is a great guy and even better coach. He will get a big job pretty soon but he does love CHS and feels it is a good place to raise his sons.

Doubt they drop Chambers any time soon since he has a few years left on his contract and we probably miss out on Earl.

The last two times Penn State has hired a basketball head coach, Penn State has hired the head coach of a recently successful mid major program with no “name” recognition. Given the success we’ve had the last 16 years, I would assert that formula hasn’t worked.

I’d like to see them go after a top assistant from a highly successful top 10 D1 program, one who”s name everybody knows. For example, if we had pulled the trigger last fall, Jeff Capel and Danny Hurley would have been great guys to offer. Would they have come to Penn State? Clearly Pitt and UCONN have had more success in basketball than we’ve had in the past 20 years but both struggled mightily recently and I would claim, we have as good, if not better young talent on our roster than either of those 2 schools. Of course, this type of coach doesn’t come cheap and Penn State would have to be willing to pay the going rate for this type of coach. I couldn’t find a salary figure for Capel, but Hurley is reportedly getting 3 million per year at UCONN.

Capel’s making just about what Hurley is making. Pitt offered them both about the same salary, and Hurley took the UConn job when they matched what Pitt was offering.

For reference, last I saw Chambers was making south of $1M. Is this athletic department willing to triple (at least) what they’ve previously been willing to spend, on top of getting the support facilities and infrastructure up to par, too? I’ll believe that when I see it.

Earl Grant is from Charleston.

PSU doesn't pay Chambers $1mm, so it's not a given that they'll fork that out for the next coach.

Good post, should put an end to this thread. Let's continue with Benny Hill.

My second, third and fourth choices...

Marty Feldman
Rodney Dangerfield
Rudy Giuliani

Actually, when I think of it, Rodney Dangerfield could be my first pick for an obvious reason.

Well if we had players who could shoot well and make free throws, I’d be happy with that. Chambers’ players don’t seem to play fundamentally sound basketball. We put up horrible shots (and therefore miss them), don’t block out under the boards, miss a ton of layups, and basically run a schoolyard offense. I want a well coached team run by someone who can win close games. I believe that Earl Grant knows how to coach. Chambers always looks like a deer in the headlights. I don’t trust him to produce a well coached team.

If there is a program in need of a splash hire, it is PSU bb. They need someone with name recognition, can recruit, and excite and sell the masses to pay attention. You see an uptick when they win. Kind of think about it, they need the basketball version of James Franklin.

And since a BB game is only 40 minutes, we won’t be experiencing all those meltdowns that occur in the 50-60 minute stage of FB games!

PSU’s financial commitment is that if a mid major program playing in a top P5 conference. Two of their top 3 returning players have completely crapped the bed this year and one of their marquis freshmen guards is not playing up to their potential. That’s a recipe for a troubling season. They will never pay $2 million for a basketball coach. Never. They struggled to pay Chambers short of a million. Yes, you get what you pay for.

"Struggled?" PSU didn't struggle to extricate $4mm for ICA for some of Indiana Fats's pet projects.
