I caught a segment on PK Subban on espn this morning. Interesting story. They focused a bit on his struggles as a Black Canadian hockey player, but I'd rather not focus on that here. Rather, I am curious to hear from hockey experts about his talent, personality, and the way he left Montreal.

From what I have seen, Subban is a serious talent. He's a good skater for a big man and has a great slapshot. espn talked about his personality and physical game not fitting well in the conservative nhl. I haven't seen enough of Subban to judge. As for Montreal, he didn't get along with the coach and was not named a captain, yet he says the organization never explained why they let him go. I wonder about that.

Thoughts on Subban?

Very talented guy, but up until this year was clearly a me-first type of teammate. Plays borderline dirty, but that is certainly not unusual in the garage league. Skates well and has a great shot.

The problem with him is going to be his shelf-life with any given coach. He doesn't seem to like head coaches much. Lavy is not a lovable sort of guy; you wonder when they will clash. It'll come eventually. I predict he won't finish his career in Nashville, although I'm certainly not saying he'll be leaving anytime soon. Right now he's a bright shiny object, and he's on his best behavior given that the Canadiens dumped him. Maybe he's grown up, but I see him being the kind of player that moves on a lot. I bet he winds up in Toronto someday, which is where he is from. His personality would play well there.

That is a fantastic description. He can play AND he's a grade-A azzwhole.

I don't claim to be a hockey expert but I do know that P.K. Subban isn't African American. He's a Black Canadian. Canadians hate being misidentified as Americans.

 Thanks for the correction. I did not realize he was Canadian.

Perhaps he will grow up. He got caught up in emotion when Nashville played at Montreal this season. The crowd embraced him.

LOL. I had to shake my head when I listen to Pen fans diss Columbus. The Blue Jackets are a class organization top to bottom.... the Penn State of the NHL.

No question. Tortorella, and Brandon Dubinsky. Two of the classiest individuals in all of hockey.

Extremely talented player, but he can be undisciplined and take dumb penalties. He clashed with Therien in Montreal and they traded him for a lesser player. Now, Therien is gone. Hopefully, Suban got his wakeup call, but while he doesn't cross the line nearly as much, he can still let his emotions get the better of him. BTW, he's a French Canadian.

I am biased but Subban is a great guy and teammate...well liked by the local community. A real fan favorite.

About the only player who never clashed with Therien was Crosby and he may have too, but you wouldn't find out about it. Therien has a shelf-life wherever he goes. As mentioned by others, Suban is an extreme talent but his penchant to try to make plays (usually of the fantastic variety) is high risk, which a lot of coaches, esp. Therien, doesn't like. Coaches tend to be risk adverse, esp. defensive minded ones, who usually have more success, which leads to more job security.

I think a lot of Subban's issues with perception come from when he was still a pretty young and immature competitor. It didn't help to have him in the Montreal market where every hiccup was overanalyzed.

He's a personality that you want in sports though. Fun guys with a big heart in the community.

I think his ceiling as a player is similar to Letang although I'd give Letang an edge in his skating.

Perfect illustration of "political correctness" gone amok. Original poster asked a very legitimate, intellectual question but he used the PC phrase for black Americans in describing a black Canadian. Then, Uber PC poster "nitt" picks and injects the race issue with a hypodermic needle and massive syringe. OP now finds himself apologizing and edits original post. Almost no true insight gained on the original question after the nittpick.
Why can't we just say that the talented, verbose, flamboyant English speaking black guy from Ontario struggled to become popular with the French speaking folks in highly provincial Montreal?

Except Subban was a fan favorite in Montreal.

He and Letang are probably the top 2 defensemen in the league (with Karlsson right there in the mix too). He skates great, quarterbacks the power play like a Paul Coffey, and he plays with an edge that you need from a top-line defensemen. I think in his younger days, he took that edge a bit too far and it gave him some of the bad rap that he's received as borderline dirty (he had the nickname PK Slewban for a little while). I used to think he was a complete jackass on the ice when the Pens and Habs squared off regularly. He's seemed to tone down that act this year. I think the trade to Nashville was a bit of a wakeup to him and it allowed him to maybe hit the reset button in a fresh city. It's definitely worked out in year 1. And by all accounts, his off-ice demeanor and personality is Grade A.

He kicked Jordan Staal (extremely dangerous with a razor sharp ice skate on) and severed his achilles tendon. That is a big no-no among hockey players from what I understand. For that, he will always be a dirty punk in my book.

The trade allowed the Preds to cover for the loss of Jones on the back line (the Johanssen trade). Jones is a very good (but somewhat quiet) D.
