Home Depot or Lowe's

I usually find slightly better prices at Home Depot, but Lowes is closer.

Neither. They are my purchasing locations of last resort.

Both have 50% - 100% mark-ups on products that your can otherwise purchase through local distributors/wholesalers who will gladly sell to you provided you have a credit card.

I like Home Depot better. My local Home Depot has very helpful clerks. They seem to know where everything is and will take you to it. Many give advice on the best way to do home projects. That said, Lowe's is a good store too. If I find out that Lowe's has lower prices, I go to Lowe's.

They own each other....both garbage vendors. Taxpayers pay a large portion of their inept employees wages. ...

I find HD has better supply and options for major projects while Lowe’s has better DIY options, but either will do.

if they were side by side in a strip mall, I would head to HD first for project. The quality of wood sucks in both places and like BW Lion said you may have better options for lumber by looking around. I swear there is not a straight pine 2x4 in either place.

I used to work in Logistics for HD. They always said HD is for men. Lowes is for women.

I have a ton of respect for HD. People tend to form an opinion on the two based on customer service experiences. I can tell you from a management perspective, HD took customer service very seriously. It was very intense from top to bottom during my tenure.

I left because I personally was not a good fit. Too much to explain here.

I shop HD first because you’re essentially buying the same quality at a better price. Also, I still know a lot of the people at the stores in my area.

If I want something high quality, with the exception of power tools, I would not buy from either.

I've heard HD is geared for the general public, whereas Lowe's has much more items geared for contractors.

Our local HD is probably 3 times more busy compared to the local Lowe's. And Lowe's has the better location. Nuff said.

I'm serious - I prefer my local Ace Hardware...
Ace is the best alternative for the homeowner - though more expensive. Contractors don't deal w/ them because of cost. They are a non-factor in the actual working world.

Paul B Hardware. Near Ephrata or Belleville, Pa. Not only a ton of experienced employees happy to help, but a great selection. One employee actually offered to let me borrow a tool from his house that the store did not carry.

As others have said Ace Hardware much better than the two big box chains.

I really miss O.W. Houts. However, I like the local Ace. They may not have the extensive selection, but they almost always have what I need. I also find the staff at the State College Ace to be a bit more knowledgeable that some of the folks at Lowes & Depot.

Lowe's is for women and Home Depot is for men. Just look around and compare the two the next time your out. I think it's clear.

Lowes is better than HD where I live, but agree with the Ace comment above, our first stop...

If i had to pick between the two, I don't have enough experience with Lowes, so HD. If it's just lumber, I go to local Lumber yards/ premium wood vendors.

I ordered 3 ceiling fans at HD via the internet. After 6 weeks and still no delivery I tried to cancel the order but HD said it was a special order and refused to do it. After persisting they finally cancelled and gave me a refund. I ordered them from Amazon and got them delivered the next day for the same price. HD lost me as a customer for life.

HD first for price and selection, but Lowes has a 10% discount for veterans, so for big ticket items I give them a look.

HD is trash.. I have bought a lot of tools and appliances from Lowes and never had an issue.

My HD in Allentown PA provides a 10% to vets, too. Just checked online and it appears to be HD corp. policy. HD is just five minutes from my home and staff is very helpful. Lowes is several miles through the city (ugh) and I had an experience where the sales lady was snarky with an attitude. Choice for me is clear.

Half of the battle is going to the same store repeatedly so you know where everything is. My “home store” is a HD, but even if I go to another HD that has a different layout, I need a damn map and compass to find anything.

Lowe’s gives 10% discount for vets also. Lowe’s is closer has more of what I need it’s cleaner and the employees are friendlier at least where I live.

Totally depends on location- I use Lowes in one place and HD in the other. The differences between locations are greater than the ones between the chains themselves.

Obviously not a Midnighter poll question....Do you have a preference Home Depot or Lowe's?
Home Depot ..hands down. My experience over the year's is that staff at HD have been overwhelmingly helpful while my experience at Lowes is that it's a PITA finding staff to help. I have literally stopped going to Lowe's for anything.

A few years ago someone opened a Lowe’s card in the wife’s name and proceeded to purchase $24000 in Lowe’s gift cards throughout stores in OR and WA over a 3 day period and Lowe’s didn’t catch on so I guess it’s Home Depot for us though identify theft can happen anywhere.
