How can it be fair in NFL OT to not give each team equal chances?

Why are you guys surprised? It's been this way forever in OT. Green Bay knew the rule. At worst, hold them to a FG.

I'm not surprised. I just never liked the rule. That said, after getting the tie in the last second, Green Bay should have had the momentum to shut AZ down and they couldn't get it done.

I agree. I am really surprised Green Bay wasn't dominant in OT. They clearly had momentum.

Wasn't meant to be I guess when you lose 2 coin flips! Then leave a great receiver wiiiiidddddeeeee open.

What do you mean it's been this way forever? They only implemented the new OT rules a couple years ago. Even after the Fitz catch had GB held them to 3 they would've had a chance.

A fairer way is to require a minimum of 2 possessions in OT so each team gets one chance on offense. Then after that, sudden death.

The college rule favors kicking way too much and a game that was 17-17 in regulation can become 54-51 after overtime

I guess he means it's been forever that the first team to get the ball, scoring a td, wins. With the old rules maybe AZ tries a FG after the long pass. Either way GB loses.
I like the TD and it is over rule in place now. But won't be shocked to see it changed again.

the overtime was the least of the problems in that game

I've never seen so much pass interference just ignored by the officials

How about continuing play from wherever the ball was at the end of the 4th quarter and having sudden death?

Thankfully there are no kicking contests to determine wins like soccer has

Hold them to a field goal is all you have to do. Get the ball back and win. The College rule is terrible. Some of those OT games are ridiculous.

I'd go with ties in the regular season, and maybe 10 minute OT periods (with limited clock stoppages) in playoffs.

Maybe 10 minute OTs for divisional play during regular season as well.

Both are loaded with disadvantages. The college rule could be improved moving the ball back 5 or ten yards after each tie.

College has the better rule.
Just for the fun of it.....I propose a rule change. In OT, both teams get to possess the ball at least once. On each teams first possession they can not go for it on 4th down. Both teams must punt.
After the first possession by each team the standard rules apply. Have at it guys. The argument against changing the rules has been if the first possessing team scores a TD and the rule is changed so the other TD gets kicked to, they have 4 downs all the way down the field to score and tie it up. This rules change takes that away. On their first possession both teams can move the ball down the field and score, however they must punt on 4th down. Just a thought o make the game more fair.

NFL OT should be SUDDEN DEATH, simple as that. No fruity elementary school 'everybody gets a chance' B.S.

Put your big boy undies on and grab the brass ring. simple as that.

college game OT is fine, though part of me longs for the days w/o OT and a tie had ramifications (some good, some negative) ...
