How promising are Penn State's 'other' 125/133 wrestlers?

I have read very little about Penn State's lightweight wrestlers not named Cortez or Suriano (or Gulibon). Can anyone share information or opinions about them? Is there any reason to think it likely or unlikely that there is a Conaway among them?

Unlikely. People forget Conaway was a PA champ and 2x state finalist who beat the #1 ranked guy in his weight at Dapper Dan.

They're all good HS wrestlers who should be quality depth, and maybe someone can break through in a couple years.

I think it takes some special kids to come wrestle here and know that they may wrestle none or very few varsity matches, especially if they could start else where. And I don't doubt that the Iowa's and OSU's of the world have similar stories.

...yes, in that Dapper Dan meet:

Conaway beat Blair's Silver (Stanford)

Megaludis beat Michigan's Youtsey...

that's kind of how PSU likes things. non-starters are rarely, if ever, made available to the press. and the wrestlers and their families rarely discuss what takes place in the room. when they do discuss it, it's with folks that are generally smart enough to not post about it on public message boards.

Can anyone share information or opinions about them?

If you dig, you can find how they did in Opens. Beyond that, I don't think you'll find folks that either know more about the guys in question, or are willing to share such info.

As El-Jefe indicated, Conaway was a PA State Champ, and a 2x PA State finalists. Each of the other 125/133 guys in the room have some talent, but none has this type of record. Dominic Giannageli finished 4th in PA as a senior. I think George Carpenter won a title in North Carolina as a junior, and finished 3rd as a senior. Patrick Higgins had a good HS career in NJ, and Scott Stossel had a nice HS career in PA, but I don't think either of them placed at States (not certain of that).

I think Yanovich has some potential, but not as heralded as Conaway out of HS.

Not sure how I left out Yanovich in my earlier reply. When thinking about how to reply to the OP, I had thought about Yanovich.

Like Higgins and Stossel, Yanovich had a very nice high school career. He qualified for PA States 3 times. I don't think he placed, but as with Stossel and Higgins, I'm not certain that he never placed.

No biggie, I figured an oversight so just thought I'd throw his name out there. He had a solid record last year(9-5) but quality of competition not stellar.

Cael Sanderson has one wrestler, every year, who rises up and becomes someone that nobody thought he could ever be. It happens every year. See: James English, Gino Morelli, etc...

After Suriano and Cortez there are backups. If necessary, those backups would compete with some skill and lots of heart but very few Big10 victories.

If you keep up this negative attitude, we might cut a couple grand off of your monthly PSU recruiting stipend!
Wow! I can't believe the recruiter of the year is only getting a stipend. Willie should demand an

I thought we already did that, after the Lee debacle.

When I look at 2018 I think we'll be okay even if Suriano can't hold 125.

Yanovich, as a RS Jr, should be at least competitive and even if he's a NQ we will still be the team to beat. Just look at the rest of the line-up. 133 Suriano, 141 Cortez, 149 Zane, 157-197 insert any combination of studs, 285 Nevills.

Maybe not the world domination line-up we would have with Lee, but I could see 9 AAs coming from that line-up two years from now.

Obviously an injury at 125 or 133 this year will hurt us, but we'll still be better off than trying to wrestle a 184 pounder at HWT.

Nobody in the history of the sport, has had two deep AA quality at each and every weight, not even Gable's famous 97 team. If somebody who is top 8 at their weight gets injured, it is very, very difficult to replace him with someone else who is his absolute equal. It just doesn't happen.

Expecting Penn State to lose Cortez or Suriano, and replace them with an equal talent, is asking an awful, awful lot, not to mention, it's fairly pessimistic. Why don't we, instead, count on both Nick and Jered, having a healthy year, wrestling hard, improving, having fun, and scoring points on their way to AA seasons? That happens about 90 % of the time, as opposed to somebody going out for the year with injury, which is much more rare. Even Nick Nevills, is finally healthy, and he's had two seasons of fluke injury to deal with.

You must be one of those new-fangled optimists I've heard so much about.

Fix is a junior. He can't sign with ANY school until October.
