How are red / green ankle bands assigned? If there’s similarity to singlet color, as a logical first choice?

Also, they didn’t wear them at MD dual last weekend, which was odd. Guess they forgot them at the BJC. 😉

Home team (or higher seed in tournaments) is green... unless the ref wants to change it to match singlet color.
And why don't they have multiple sets of each so a guy doesn't have to stop to put them on when they step on the mat and take them off before they leave?
idk... tradition. two sets would.be enough. one for the current match and another for the next match.

They would have to have a line item on the budget just for ankle bands. Those things would disappear so quick, it would make your head spin.

As a youth wrestling official, the thing I always found counter-intuitive was red on my left hand and green on my right. You know, because red starts with the letter R ...
I agree with you in regards to red:left hand, green:right hand. Confuses me too.

As someone who has worked tables at youth tournaments, I tried to match up the color of the singlet to the ankle bands to help the ref's out as much as I can.

Also, we have multiple sets of bands and kids walk away with them.

Of course, this is youth wrestling. Not NCAA.

It is constant with navigation. green is on the right wingtip of a plane and right side of a boat.
I remember this by both green and right have 5 letters... but your starts with R will probably mess me up now.

When I wrestled in high school, 1978-1981 (I know ancient history 😛), we did not wear ankle bands in dual meets. Just tournaments, Xmas, opens, and post season; sections, districts, states. Was that just an Lancaster-Lebanon League thing in duals?

That was contemporaneous to me and I can't remember if we had ankle bands at all.

Now, that's ancient.

Couple of thoughts...
1. Okay, when wrestling mats fly...
2. In the heat of a match, you're thinking, "Right has five letters, green has five letters, the guy with green ankle bands scored a takedown, raise my right hand for green." In the meantime, Mesenbrink has scored three more takedowns, and you're flapping your wings like a chicken with its head cut off. What about starboard?

Tou can remember that green goes on the right wrist however you want... but if you keep thinking R is for right and R is for red the score will be wrong.
And your boat may collide with another.

Often times able bands are preassigned in tourneys but as a table worker assigned bands on uniform color but bands come in handy for referees when u have two uniforms that are predominantly red or green, ie Utah valley versus Michigan state or northern Illinois versus Nebraska, home team in dual meet is normally green but referee has discretion to change

How about home and away singlets instead, like red and blue in international competition?

Then we wouldn’t be able to hear JB say at the start of every meet, “PSU is in their traditional navy blue singlets with the nittany lion head on the chest and a white belt around the waist!”

Early 90’s we never wore anklets for regular season duals. Tournaments and post season duals we did. I’ve seen a couple high school dual meets in the last couple years where they didn’t wear them. I’m assuming it was at the discretion of the ref.

Red is on the same side as your heart (should have replied this on Friday). That's how I was told to remember when I started officiating many moons ago.

Best way to remember, Green (in red lettering) is on the right.

EIther that or just have a navy blue singlet with a white "belt". ;) But seriously, that "belt" was a thing of genius (as long as not too many picked it up).

Plus....I like the traditional navy blue with the white belt. I never cared for the white with blue belt.
